    Hi ladies,

Ok, we are going to dr. on Monday for 4 month appt. Did anyone else's kiddos have problems with tear ducts, etc still at 4 months? At 2 months dr. said not too worry they would clear up on their own, they had lots of gunk (very technical term) in them. At the time, they had a little infection of some sort so it was yellowish. Ok, fast forward 2 months, they still have goopy stuff. So, I massage the little area below tear ducts and I always get a somewhat clear, almost egg-white like goop out of it. In Isaac, it is both eyes and with Jorden, it is just one eye. I have done warm compresses, massaging, etc. I can do this at least 5 times a day and get the goopy stuffy coming out. I really just do it when I notice their eyes are full with watery tears, but that is pretty often. Of course I will mention this to dr. but just wanted some background from anyone else. Thanks ladies!

By the way, my DH just came in and rolled his eyes and said are you STILL on TS? I said of course!

I am anxious to see your replies. My daughter is 7 wks old and has two blocked tear ducts. None of my other kids had this problem. It has gotten better but it is not completely better.

Does your child cry every time you massage their eye?

No, they used to really hate it but I think the poor guys are getting used to it now. I did learn to do it either when they are eating their bottles (quite a sight, holding 2 bottles, one with hand, one with chin, trying to massage eye) or right afterwards when they seem content. Isaac even kind of giggles at me now. Are these really blocked tear ducts when they can cry real tears etc? Does it still count if all that goop is coming out?

My oldest did and eventually it did go away. I was worried that he needed to have his tear duct opened by a surgeon but it worked itself out. Thank goodness. :)

Did it take quite a while for it to work itself out?
    Thanks!

My friend's son had that as well. By 6 months it was gone. Hope it clears up soon!

Meara still has one blocked tear duct and she is 5 months old. Our doctor to keep doing the massage and it should clear up on its own. She didn't give me a time line for it, but I'm not too worried since it doesn't bother Meara and she doesn't fuss when I do the massage. -Leighann

My DS had it until about 7 months when it finally cleared up. We just massaged it and kept it clean.

I've heard that it can take up to 11-12 months to correct itself. Just try not to massage too hard, you don't want to irritate their ducts.

Jacob's cleared up at about 10 months. I remember clearly that the ped said not to bother massaging because there was no evidence that it helped clear the block. So we never massaged it and it cleared on its own.

My DD had a blocked tear duct from the day she was born. I massaged it and did the warm compress until about 6 months old until she caught on and would really start to fuss and wiggle. I was told the same thing by my Ped that it would probably go away on its on. I did take her to a Pediatric Optho at around 6 months to make sure that he thought the same thing and he said that can be true in most cases but that some do need surgery to unblock but that they wont consider that until 12 months because so many unblock on their own as you can also see by the PP's.

So at 12 months she still had it so it did need surgery. It was a very quick procedure but it does require anesthesia. But I can tell you she bounced right back within a couple of hours. So I guess what I am trying to say is that if it doesnt clear up on its own, the other path is not so bad.

We have been dealing with this is one of my sons since about 1 week old. We went through Vigamox drops (very little change) and are now on Erythromycin ointment. They are about 95% better now, since starting the Erythromycin!!! We're still using the ointment to get to 100%, but I've been very pleased with it despite the fact that I hate giving antibiotics to him at such a young age. HTH
