My pediatrician recommended that my children be assessed by the state just to err on the side of caution. My daughter isn't crawling yet. I don't feel this is totally out of the ordinary as my nephew who will be 1 in a few weeks JUST started to roll. What has been your experience with state sponsored programs/therapy, etc.

    Concerned/nervous,
    Thanks!

Our experience has been great. If they evaluate her and find she doesn't need any intervention, well...good to know! If they have any concerns, she can get help early when it's most effective and you can get tons of information and tips to encourage her development. We've enjoyed our time with ECI, but we're hoping Ethan will graduate before he ages out this fall. Anthony graduated in Jan!

You can get her evaluated but really not crawling at 9 months is not that big of deal esp. for a preemie. I know many twins who did not crawl until 12 months. Oh Nicole I just noticed, our twins' birthdays are coming up soon too! :)

I have been so greatful for our EI I imagine where my girls would be now without it. They would be so behind. Have them evaluated and if they need the therapy I think you will be very happy they had it!

I agree, no harm in getting the eval done. But I don't think that she is really "behind" as far as the crawling.

I agree with Sarah that there really is nothing to worry about with a preemie not crawling at 9 months, I know some full term babies that weren't crawling at 9 months.

But on the otherhand, it won't hurt to get the evaluation. Both of mine receive PT through EI 2x/month and they automatically qualify based on low birth weight. The PT comes to my house and I have a say in whatever is done. I can stop at anytime. But hey, I look at it as free therapy, PT's are expensive and I'm all for doing anything I can to keep my two up to speed.

Ditto everyone else. cant hurt to get eval and find out they are right on. Or need therapy to catch up. My boys were eval at 18 months for not talking. Have been in speech therapy since and are now talking up a storm. by 2.5 we expect them to be discharged. I cannot say enough good things about EI.

I forget already but Zach did not crawl until later than Josh. I am thinking closer to 9-10 months. And they did not really walk until 14 months which is all in the range of normal.

    GOOD LUCK.

We have been very happy with the EI program. We have had a nurse assigned to us since I brought the babies home. She asked if I wanted a PT because my daughter hated tummy time and was behind on pushing up. I loved our PT and she showed me all these great exercises to encourage Eliza in her development. We have had the best experience. I would take the free evaluation. Good Luck!

First - your babies were great weights for only being 34 weeks gestation!

Next, I tell all my patients with preemies to have them evaluated around a year - just in case. Most turn out fine but since preemies start out with a struggle it doesn't hurt to get them a little extra help just to be sure they are caught up.

I agree with what a pp said about them not really being behind at this stage. My son was on time and he didn't crawl until 10 months. This is espcially true with kids that can roll and scoot. They don't need to crawl if they have there own way of getting where they want to go! When you adjust your little guys six weeks for being early - they are still fine to not crawl! Now, your nephew who just started rolling at 1 would worry me - but for your little guys - they are still in the normal range!
