Erupted wisdom teeth?

Jacob very clearly has a third molar on one lower side. It's half exposed, half impacted - and looks grayish, almost black. Is this possible? I thought that wisdom didn't even form until the teenage years. He went to the dentist yesterday, who didn't mention anything about it.

BTW, he hasn't lost any teeth, and none are even loose.

I just took my boys to the dentist, who pointed out some incomplete enamel formation on Kiko's first permanent molar. I was shocked to hear that he already had a permanent molar!! I thought they didn't get those until age 12. So, I think that they do get molars way back there at Jacob's age. I just assumed it was a late-erupting baby tooth, not an early-arriving permanent one.

The molars that come in around 6 are their first pair of permanant molars. If you count your molars, you have 4 sets. The 4th set comes in around 12 and the Wisdom teeth will come in later. I had mine pulled, so I have 28 teeth. If the Wisdom teeth come in without having to be pulled you would have 32 teeth.

Sharon, I'm a bit confused. He already has 3 molars on the side, plus the one that is coming in. So next to the canine, he has that halfish molar, plus the regular two, plus this one coming in. It just seems so earlier, especially considering that he hasn't lost any baby teeth (which is a source of disappointment.)

From your description, it sounds like it's the 12-year molar coming in (which would be the seventh tooth on that side).

Cathy, we will just have fun peering in his mouth in 3 weeks :)

BTW, both of my boys had all 4 six year molars before loosing a tooth.
