My sons were switched from Neosure to Enfamil AR a couple of days ago. Since they have been switched the vomiting has stopped. Now, it seems we have a new problem.

One of the twins had a pretty thick bowel movement yesterday and the other one still hasn't gone. When they fall asleep they wake up several times crying and curling up into little balls. I'm thinking they are constipated because they aren't really passing a lot of gas.

Does Enfamil AR cause constipation? If so what do you do to relieve it in a six week old?

    TIA

I haven't used it, but I it does have rice starch, I think that's what it is, in it to thicken it to help with spitting up, so yes it can constipate them. We've always added rice cereal and sometimes had the same problem unitl they started eating fruits everyday. I used to put Karo syrup in the bottles if they were constipated. I would use 1tsp. for every 2 oz. of formula, that is what my pedi. told me to use.

It's the rice in the AR. Rice is constipating. I was in your boat - the AR worked pretty well but it constipated my girls. My ped suggested putting oatmeal cereal in the bottle with regular formula (I used regular Enfamil Lipil), and using an increased nipple size so the thickened formula can flow out. I did this for a few days but I didn't see improvement, so I gave up and just fed them the regular Lipil, which they did the best on anyway. We dealt with more spitting up, but that was just the way it was and we got used to it. We also had them on Zantac for about 2 months which seemed to help at the time. They still spit up now but it's gotten much better as they have gotten older.

Sophia is oh AR and it does couse constipation. What helps is 2-3 oz of undiluted prune juice couple of times a day.

It caused constipation in mine so we switched to gentlease, which worked well for the reflux and didn't constipate at all.

Ours were constipated on that and our pedi said we could give up to 2 oz of pear juice mixed with the formula a day. It worked well and the pear juice doesn't stain the clothes as bad as prune juice does.
