Some of you may remember a thread after Thanksgiving about Natalie reading the names on the stockings - she wasn't remembering them from last year because they were new.

Today at a stop light the car in front of us had a bumper sticker and a vanity plate that both said Donate Life. I was noticing them but didn't say anything and we were the only two in the car. Natalie said "life". I turned around and said to her "Did you say life" and she said "yes" I asked her why and she just gave me a big grin. I asked her if she said life because of the bumper sticker on the car in front of us and she said "yes" I asked her if she could read and she said yes with a big grin.

That would be amazing. You should find little ways to test her!! Wouldn't that be COOL!?! (I see an appearance on ELLEN in your future!!)

I began reading at 2 1/2 and my sister read before she was 3, so it is definately possible! Smart little cookie you have there :)

I would say it is possible, but most likely she is recognizing words as sight words. Meaning that she is "reading" words that she is familiar with. Just like on the stockings, even though they were new stockings, I am sure she has seen the names around the house--I know we have tons of stuff with the boys names on it. I would just follow her lead, and see where she takes you. There is no point in having her tested, no one is really going to do anything with it, and as long as you keep her interested, and let her lead you without pressure, she will truly blossom.

This is really what I meant as opposed to true reading. We read books a lot - still, I'm surprised she can do this at 26 months

Even if it's familiar words, it's still reading!!

Not all kids read phonetically. Some kids recognize whole words--I think it's called whole language learning/reading.

That's great!!! You have a future start on your hands.

Alexis read the word EGG at 3 and flowers at 3.5 and I don't know what else she can read. so it's possible. but she sounded it out phonetically. It wasn't a sight word. to test her, you can get a list of sight words from Sylvan learning center. I might even have them in my computer some where, and I'll be happy to email you a copy after Christmas, just PM me.

Both our boys read quite a few words and it seems like it's increasing weekly... They were really into their alphabet and knew all the letters by 15 mos and have known the "sound" of each letter since about 2 (thank you Leap Frog refrigerator system!)... Just before 3 they started sounding things out that they would see and now we'll be walking in the store and they will say things like "that says Sale!" or "that says Off" etc etc. My mom says I was an early reader as well, so I think some kids just get it a little earlier than others. Now with that being said, my boys are not interested in coloring or crafts at all... all numbers and letters at this point. All kids are amazing IMO... I can't imagine learning things at the rate these little ones do! I wish I had that kind of brain power! LOL

I would believe it...my girls had names and few other 'sight' words (stop, off, on) around 2. Thanks to Leapfrog Phonics, they knew sounds & letters when they started to talk (later talkers) around then.

At 3 they can sound out very simple 3 letter words (cap, hat, top, etc) and have built up sight words even more just from exposure. Some of them are funny and totally explain what we do all day-Sams Club, Walmart, mall, zoo, pizza, library, men/ women (potty signs on public bathrooms!). We aren't doing anything formal, but they are so interested & excited at this point in time it amazing what they remember!

It is just from lots of reading and home and one has a strong desire to do it herself when it comes to EVERYTHING including reading....we keep it fun, read a lot at home, and explore what they like---I just know princess will be a word they know soon!LOL.

Enjoy it and dont be surprised if she takes off!

Considering that my dad could read books to his 2 and 1 yo siblings at age 3, it certainly is possible that she is "reading" now. As pp said, it is probably sight words at this point, but that will expand into real reading later.
