I'm trying to think of 'new' foods for my little ones to eat for dinner/supper, and I was thinking about eggs. I've heard they can't eat the whites of eggs, but are the yoks okay to eat? what other foods are you giving to your LO's, trying to add some variety into it for them?
There is a sticky at the top of this forum with suggestions on finger foods in the first year...I used that for ideas! Some great stuff! As for the egg whites...I think that some babies may have allergies to it-I however, gave mine the whole egg at 9mo and they did fine-my pedi said he thought it would be fine. My family has no history of food allergies so I dont know if that is why he thought it would be fine.
I just asked about foods at their 9 month checkup. Their pedi said they can eat whatever we eat, but to not give them eggs (even the yolks), peanut butter or shell fish until after they are a year. There are plenty of other foods for them to eat so that doesn't bother me.
We've been giving our egg yolks since they were about 9 months old and they love egg yolks. I am not sure as to why they cannot have the whites yet myself but for our one year checkup, I plan on asking the pedi. We do have the sticky on the top of the forum and you can always check out wholesomebabyfood.com
QUOTE(2plusbgtwins @ Dec 22 2008, 02:18 PM) I dont have any suggestions really, but just wondering why they shouldnt have egg whites? egg whites can trigger an allergy, like peanut butter, and citrus should be not given before a year!
The egg whites are a potential allergen, but the yolks are great for babies. They completely dissolve, so they make great finger foods. Just hard boil and then separate the yolk from the white.
Yep, it works out great. I boil the eggs. I eat the whites (the only part I like) and give the yolks to the babies. It's a beautiful relationship we have right now. Other great foods are avocado chunks, banana chunks, little pieces of lunch meat. And as PP's said, we have a sticky up top with ideas.
