Hi there. Turns out the strange, scaley rash on Evan's shins is eczema. It's really sore-looking and full of scratches because he itches it even through his pants, poor little guy. Any tips on how to help him? The doctor gave us some very strong cream which is supposed to help this outbreak within a couple of days (I hope so because I wouldn't want to give it to him for very long - it's steriod-based). She also recommended putting Aveeno oil in his bath (it's mineral oil, oats, etc.) and keeping his legs really moist with vaseline.

Anything else I should be doing?

You could try the Cetaphil cream. I got it at Target and it helps with sensitive skin.

One of my girls has eczema around her neck, poor thing...we finally got the right cream, steroid based too. What I did at first is used it for the week like they told us to (even though it cleared up in two days, I was thrilled!) and now when she has a little flare up, I'll use the cream for a couple of days and then stop if it's cleared up, which it has. Our docs office also said they needed to be off of the cream for a week to 10 days because of the steroid and then they can use it again.

    Hope the cream helps!

We use Vanicream on my dd exzema. You should also switch to a perfume and dye free laundry soap if you dont already use one (and dont forget about dryer sheets too).

My two year old has extreme eczema, and we battle flare-ups with a few different steroid creams...but when the flare-up is over we always keep him covered in Aquaphor (one step down from vaseline in greasiness). Limiting the time he's in water helps a lot. he takes showers, not baths most of the time. Using fragrance free detergent didn't help at all, but fragrance free lotion makes a huge difference. Also my dr. recommended using a water based lotion first--like aveeno, followed by the greasy stuff to seal it in. good luck!

My DS has it on his face from time to time and got very bad at one point this past winter. What helped the most was the steroid cream and then limiting his baths to every other night (he was bathing every night)

My girl has a slight case. The pedi said to put a tiny bit of Cortisone cream on it.

my dd has eczema as well. we got a prescription cream for her and it really works great! after her bath at night i would rub it on and then moisturize with Aveeno moisturizer. I also put it on in the am before dressing her. within a couple of days it was completely clearing up.

The Aveeno baby naturals 24hr cream is awesome, it isn't super greasy and a little goes a long way. I put it on at night when my DD was having issue w/ eczema.

Aquaphor where it is really bad, and Eucerin in the morning and at night (when changing clothes) keeps most of my girls at bay.
