Movin' on up to 1-5!!! Can't believe I'm here now!!

We found out that Emily really liked to eat her bday cake with a spoon, rather than digging in with her fingers, so I have let her try a few times (with non staining food like apple sauce :D ) and she's not too bad at it. She get's it in the bowl really well, and about one out of every 2 or 3 tries she gets the spoon into her mouth. I still spoon feed behind her, or we would be sitting at the table all day, but when do they actually start eating with a spoon? Should I keep trying, or wait til later? I have given Sam a spoon, all he wanted to do was bang on his tray with it...typical!!

It's never too early to give them a spoon (unless the banging is getting on your nerves :icon_biggrin: ). I didn't give mine a spoon until about 13 months when I realized that daycare had been giving them spoons for a month already. I was surprised to find that Sarah already knew how to use it! She was very messy (and is still messy at 19 months), but she really enjoys it, and can eat quite a lot of yogurt that way. She still can't really eat soup or anything very liquidy -- it has to be solid enough not to completely fall off the spoon when she turns it sideways.

Amy could probably do it too, if she chose to, but doesn't have as much interest.

They have also gotten into forks big-time, although they usually pick up the food with one hand, jam it on the fork, then eat it off the fork! Hey, whatever makes 'em happy and gets them to eat more...

Yikes, at 15 months we really haven't tried utensils yet. DH gets a bit stressed with the eating mess (much more so than I)...so maybe we'll have to practice this experiment while Daddy is at work until we can perfect it a little more.

SIDEBAR QUESTION: How long did folks offer utensils before they picked up on it?

I give the boys spoons when I am feeding them and let them try and scoop stuff up. Mostly they just bang the spoon on their tray and make messes. If I load the spoon and put it in Spencer's hand he can get it in his mouth, but we still need some work!

I think at around 14 months I started putting spoons out. DD caught on quicker than DS. Sometimes DS still just likes to dig his fingers in.

I started when they got interested. For Ainsley that was at about 15 months and Sierra was closer to 17 months. They weren't very good at it for a while but they had it down really well by about 20 months. If Emily wants to try and it doesn't bother you then go for it! :)

I have pretty much always given my kids a spoon or fork (we live on the edge, lol) while we are eating. At first it is more to entertain them than anything, but when they start trying to actually use it to eat, I will give them some food to work with while I continue to feed them myself.
