    Hi there!

I am currently 7.5 weeks pregnant and last Friday went to the hospital with very heavy bleeding. After an u/s we found out we are having twins - they both have strong heartbeats and look like they are doing okay. The bleeding was caused by a tear under my placenta. I have been put on bedrest for one week but I am worried. I am still bleeding although it's more like spotting at this point and is a brownish color, as opposed to the red it was over the weekend.

i am just wondering if anyone else experienced this in their early pregnancy. My doctor told me it happened to his wife and she was fine after a week but I just don't know. A part of me feels like I shouldn't be bleeding anymore and I don't feel like my questions are being answered in the depth I want them to be. I have a job where I am always on the go - I do career fairs so I am always hauling boxes and am really scared to go back to work.

I go for another u/s next week to make sure everything is okay but until then i'm a nervous wreck!

    Thanks!!

I had some leakage at 12 weeks and was terrified. The Dr. in the ER (this happened at 11:00 at night), did the ultrasound himself and was visibly relieved to find two heartbeats. We were nervous for awhile, too. As for the bleeding, it is my understanding that if it's brown in color than it is old blood clearing out and that it is not new bleeding. So if that's the case, you are not actually still bleeding.

I am sure you are worried. Just talk to your dr. and let him know what your job is and make sure he thinks it's ok to go back at the same activity level. Sending positive thoughts your way and do your best not to worry too much. Good luck!

Same thing happened to me--I had bleeding of varying degrees for about 8 weeks in early pregnancy and it was determined to be from some bruising behind one of the placentas. I was actually never even put on bedrest or anything and the situation resolved itself. And I've had a really uncomplicated pregnancy thus far.

It's super scary but apparently really common as well. Hang in there! Just a note though--if you end up doing the AFP test (for spinda bifida, etc around 20 weeks), you may get an elevated level. I was told that you have a higher risk of an elevated level if you've had bleeding at any point in the pregnancy but it's not necessarily indicative of a problem.

I also had bleeding early in my pregnancy. And, like you, we discovered we were having twins after a hospital trip for the bleeding, when I was convinced I was miscarrying. We joke now that we went from 0 to twins in 4 1/2 short hours. My bleeding was far heavier than what I thought spotting was... and it was red.. and it went on for weeks. All things I thought signaled the worst (or at least that is what I convinced myself of after Google research). BUT, WE ARE A SUCCESS STORY, and I am sure you will be, too.

I am 33 weeks 6 days today. Since our "episode," we have haven't had any major complications and the pregnancy is progressing nicely. So, though you are totally scared right now, try to stay positive.

BUT - do reduce your lifting and carrying, or at the very least get a hand truck or something for the boxes. It is not weak to ask for help or to set limits. See if your job will work with you to allow you to do something less taxing. If need be, enlist your doctor to help you get accommodations.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I just thought I would chime in and say me too. I had a hematoma. It was around 7.5 weeks as well and I started gushing blood. We went to the ER and all was well with the babes, just bleeding. I continued to bleed until I was about 12w along and it finally tapered off to just brown spotting and then nothing. I learned through my experience that a lot of women have bleeding in the first trimester.

I hope everything goes well for you. Congrats on your twins and welcome!

Oh wow, thank you all so much for sharing your experiences. It makes me feel so much better. I really didn't realize it was so common! I can certainly rest a lot easier. I'll feel even better after my next u/s just to make sure everything is okay!

    Thanks again!

I also had a hematoma which was discovered when I started bleeding at 6 1/2 wks along (when they discovered the twins). I bled red/brown/pink on and off until 14wks when they said the hematoma had healed itself. Hopefully I won't be seeing any more of that until I give birth hopefully in about 10wks!! Good luck to you!!

This is my first pregnancy and I started bleeding at about 6 weeks. I was scared to death. I had an U/S scheduled and instead of hearing that I miscarried, I was told I was having twins!!! The greatest relief of my life! When I went to the hospital my doctor told me there was a tear and a wall of blood and to take it easy. He also told me it increased risk of miscarriage from 5% to 40% (terrifying!) I didn't feel I had much info so started looking it up online and found out it was called a "sub-chorionic bleed" They talk about it briefly in What to Expect when Expecting.
Well, my bleeding went to a dark brown (like yours) which was the last of the blood leaving my body. I did go on a week of bedrest, even though I was told I didn't need to, just for my own assurance.
I am 14 weeks now and everything seems fine! I go Wed to hear the babies heartbeats for the first time via doppler!

    Hello again!

In the time that all of you were bleeding, at any point did you pass any mucousy (sp?) stringy discharge? A few days ago I noticed when I wiped there were just strings of brown. At first I thought maybe this was just clotting blood but I read on-line that this can be a sign of miscarriage. Then today I noticed brown clumps in the toilet so now I'm really worried...I go for my u/s tomorrow so I'm trying to stay positive, but I figured I'd try this place just to see if anyone has heard of and/or experienced that.

Brown means old blood..so hopefully it was just left over from your previous bleed and there is nothing to worry about. I gushed blood on and off for several weeks in my first trimester..it caused several calls to my doc and two trips to the ER. I was ALWAYS anxious to hear the heartbeats and to know that everything is okay. this is a very nerve racking time!!
