I posted recentl about m son's chronic ear infections, we do have an appointment later this week with an ENT and we saw our ped sterda who said the ears do still ahve fluid but may not currently be infected. When I got him out of bed this morning, I noticed a wet, discolored spot on his sheet, not unusual since he is teething however after closer examination it appears to be ear wax.

Has anyone else experienced this? Is ear drainage a good or bad thing?

Jessy had a large ball of wax just outside her ear canal today. I'm hoping she doesn't have infection

Both of mine have had this. It is usually puss colored or blood colored. Basically it is the fluid building up until the pressure gets to be too much and it pops....I always take them in and they put them on ear drops. This time however, the ENT guy said it could be a bacteria that needs a stronger antibiotic so he did a culture rather then jumping to antibiotics or tubes. He described it in comparison to a runny nose.

My son has horrible ear wax problem and it was leaking (running out) once and we went to teh ENT and he had to clean it out and told me sometimes its okay becaause the waxing is doing its job and somettimes its bad becasue the wax can get infected.. in our case his tubes were coming out and got infected and teh wax was working overtime to get them out.....

If they don't have tubes, then the drainage is likely to be a burst ear drum from an ear infection. We get drainage in Jonah's ear when he has an ear infection but he has tubes, so the point of the tubes is for it to come out. We put drops in it and all is well.

I didn't think there could be drainage without tubes unless it is the eardrum bursting or something like that. I would call the dr or the ENT.

If the drainage looks yellow...green or puss colored it might have burst an ear drum. But that is usually painful, or is was from my son and me, I had mine ear drum punctured in college when my ear was kicked under water. It hurt! If it is wax colored it could be just wax. It is good you are seeing the ENT this week, unless your child is in pain, running fever or uncomfortable I would wait for the appt. If you get tubes, ear draining is common if you have an ear infection. The tubes allow that fluid to drain. It is also nice and easy to treat ear infections with tubes by using special ear drops. We go to the ENT tomorrow too for a ear tube check up.
