Ear checkups . . .

We took DS and DD to the ENT this morning to have their ears checked. They had tubes put in their ears in February. Both children were squirming and crying because they did not want the doctor anywhere near them. The ENT could not see in DD's ears because of all of the wax buildup. He said that he'd have to remove the wax. We went into a different room and I said teasingly, "Do you have a straight jacket?" The doctor and nurse said yes with a smile and already had it out to wrap her up. I was horrified. We wrapped my little girl in a sheet and then wrapped her in another type blanket that velcroed together in three spots. She was HYSTERICAL and my heart was breaking. I knew I had to stay strong for her and talk her through it; however, I thought I was going to die. The doctor did remove a lot of ear wax and DD's right ear tube fell out at some point. Just thought I would share our traumatic experience!

I got sick to my stomach just reading your post! Poor little thing. How horrible.

I had to have tubes put in my ears twice when I was a kid and had ear infections and issues all the time. To this day I still remember "the sucker." I'd scream "NOT THE SUCKER! NOT THE SUCKER!" It was like straight out of a nightmare. Anytime I'd hear a kid crying at the doctor's office, I'd think they were getting the sucker, too. If they had used a straightjacket on me, I'd still be in therapy!

Funny story: Last year I had to go to an ENT's office about some sinus issues I was having. The nurse led me into an exam room and there beside the chair sat THE SUCKER. I almost ran backwards out of the room before I could realize what had startled me so badly. I had completely forgotten about the sucker until I saw it there, but boy it triggered quite the memories! I tried explaining it to the nurse but she just looked at me like I was crazy.

They used that on one of my DS at a previous appointment, too. Oh, it was horrible. :( However, we just went back last week for a follow up and he didn't remember it at all because he was fine. So, I know it was traumatic for you, but she probably won't remember it at all!!! Hugs.

I'm sure that was horrible, but I agree with others, she probably won't even remember it. Hugs.

I just want to say that I work with ENTs and have NEVER heard of such a contraption. Poor little thing. We do teach parents "the hold", though.

I really get so scared when I have to bring my girls to the doctors. For the very reason you just explained. But isn't amazing how strong we can be? I always think I can't do it (watch them when they're hysterical), but somehow, I always manage to keep calm for them.

Just as you did! Good going, mom! You did your daughter a real service and probably saved her a lot of mental/emotional trauma, even though she was very upset. Give yourself a big pat on the back because it's so not easy....
