So I was wondering...Has anyone been brave enough to dye Easter eggs with their twins? I mean yes-when they are 4, 5, 6, etc... But what about 17 months old??

I got a pkg of the marble dyeing kit and was thinking-that's an activity we could do one day! Now-am I crazy to think so? You can tell me if I am! I would do it alone, in their high chairs... Not sure how it would work seeing how painting with a brush did not go over so well... ;)

We did it and survived. I will admit, however, that several eggs were broken and ended up all over the floor and all over my girls. They loved the colored dyes and painting different parts of the egg. We did this outside so the broken eggs weren't a big deal. If you plan to do this inside I'd highly recommend a drop cloth or something under the high chairs.

I did not do it at that age. . I will be letting them help this year for the first time (at almost 3 yrs old)

I think putting them in the highchairs is a great idea. .Do you think maybe a little sponge would work? if you could dip it in the dye and let them dap/wipe the egg w/ it?? The dye would probably get on them, so it depends on how much mess you can stand. :)
    Good luck.

We won't be attempting it this year - at least not with their help :). I am thinking I may dye some, because my 7 yo nephew will be here for Easter and he would have some to find. I may just go get some plastic ones, but if I go that route I have to find stuff to put in them and I don't get to dye any eggs.

    Good ideas-drop cloth/sponge...

I was a preschool teacher in my previous life-and I ALWAYS picked the messy activities(painting with feet, etc...). So I guess I am up for the task...

Maybe I better hit Costco for the eggs! :D Not sure if my niece and nephew are coming for Easter, but if they do I will definitely do them.

And like someone else mentioned...I could do the plastic eggs as well...but what in the world to put in them?!?!?

I'm going to brave it at almost 25 months, but I don't know how well my girls would have done 6 months ago. Oh and the kit I got lets you dye them with just water (instead of water and vinegar), and it comes with Hello Kitty stickers too. I think my girls will have more fun putting stickers on the eggs than dying them. Maybe you can dye them and they can decorate them?

    Dude, no way. :D

My older one makes them, and I still end up with dye all over my kitchen counter....duh, I dunno why I never thought of doing it outside!

Still not sure if we'll let the twins help with the Easter eggs but you mentioned the plastic ones.. My bf had a great idea about what to put in them.. Shes put Puffs and goldfish in the ones she's giving to the twins. I thought that was so clever!
I say go for it, my bf is a preschool teacher and I swear she is always doing some sort of messy activity with them, but they always love it!

I bought a kit and will probably try it with the boys, but I think I will use the idea of doing it outside! It depends on how much time I have and how brave I am. :)

I think we'll give it a try this year. I'm not sure if I'll let them actually help with it, but at least from the highchairs, watch the eggs turn colors before their eyes!

ETA : Last year, I actually made the twins into easter eggs.. I stuck stickers all over them.. it was hilarious!

We did it last Easter. I guess the girls would have been around that age . They did great! We were outside on the deck because I didn't want to try to get dye out of the carpet and I was more relaxed. GO FOR IT!!

i would try it (i'll do other "art" with them) but i abhore the smell of boiled eggs, and nobody around here eats hard boiled anyway--me included.

i think they'll do fine, but like PP i would suggest going outside to do it

DH and I are thinking about letting them do a couple of eggs this year, probably outside. I can see egg dye going everywhere since our little ones like to make a mess!

We are going to try it this year ... Hopefully it's warm enough, and we can do it outside ... i love that idea! Otherwise I will borrow some drop clothes from my Dad (he's a painter) and spread them all over the kitchen floor and we can all have at it!

Walmart sells a great egg dying kit for little ones. It is designed like the busy bead popper toy you put egg in it and push on button like the toy would have and the egg spins around inside as they push down on the button. It is easy and mess free for the most part. :) I can't recall exact name but it is in their Easter section I will check out mine to see what it is called.

I am going to let them have fun with the eggs, but they will be in their highchairs along with a drop cloth on the floor...I am looking forward to this little adventure :yahoo:

I just bought a kit today, one that you can do with just water instead of water/vinegar. I'll probably strip them to their diapers and do it outside if its warm enough or in the kitchen with a drop cloth if its not. I hesitated about doing pumpkin carving last year with them and it was such a blast I'm glad I took the plunge.

Here it is :) It's called Dudley's spin an egg It was not $19.99 at Walmart thats for sure, but at least you can see what it looks like. The egg goes inside and the kids push the yellow button on top in repeatedly to make egg spin around. It comes with a little hand puppet to remove the egg when it is done.

We already did our eggs & it went ok. It was in a VERY controlled environment ;). We had the vinegar/water dye & it stained. Just to warn you. We all had colored fingers for a few days. We allowed the boys to 'drop' the egg into the cup & then stir it with the pick up stick thing (I don't know what that's called). They could never physically get the egg back out, so we did that & then put them back in the container. They liked seeing the eggs change colors but there weren't many fancy designs this year because they were so impatient to get to the next egg! We did ours inside (it's only like 30 degrees here), stripped down to diapers, & in their booster seats. The dye might stain a high chair tray, so pay attention to the kit you buy! That spin an egg thing looks awesome...wish I had seen that!

Here's Aiden with his eggs this year

Here's Conner with his eggs this year

    No.
Mine are almost 3 but it's just not worth it. It'd be way too messy and I don't even think they would 'get' what we were doing. I just put out the fake plastic ones. We don't eat hard-boiled eggs so for me to color them and toss them seems silly, especially since my kids are too young to appreciate them.

When they are a little older and understand we will definitley do that activity together :)

I plan on doing them with the twins (age 5). I'm sure the baby will join in...she likes to keep up with the big gilrs.

It's always a huge mess, but so much fun. Who cares about the mess!

We have always done them outside. Everyone always has fun & we have lots of pictures. I don't think I would ever do them inside, but we live in Florida so outside is almost always an option.

We won't be dying eggs until they truly understand what is going on. I want to save it because it will be so fun to see their excitement the first time they truly know what they are doing and can plan out what they want to do with their eggs. There is no rush to do certain activities. It really is more fun to wait until the kids are truly ready to make it sooo much more fun!
