I breastfeed, but I get migraines. My doc gave me some Relpax to try the next time I get a migraine. He said that not much would pas to the boys, but, if I wanted to be cautious, I could "pump and dump" for 8 hours after taking the Relpax, and substitute formula during that time. After asking on the breastfeeding forum here, and reading on kellymom, I think that I would prefer to pump, rather than risk passing any of the meds to the boys. I no longer have a freezer stash, and I am not very good about pumping. So, I want to have formula on hand, in case I don't have any pumped milk available.

Well, I don't really know anything about formula!! I bought a bottle of ready-to-serve Isomil, and I've been gradually mixing it into their cereal (I have a refluxer and a dairy-sensitive boy, so I have to test everything for allergic reactions). They seem to be doing fine with the Isomil, and I would probably continue to have ready-to-serve bottles handy (so that I don't have to measure and mix bottles when I have a migraine). BUT... how am I supposed to warm up ready-to-serve formula? Can it go in the microwave? Breastmilk can't (I've warmed/thawed breastmilk by running under warm water), because the microwave kills off nutrients/antibodies, and causes hotspots... but is formula okay? If so, do I just put the formula in the bottle (cap on or off?) and pop the bottle in the micro? Or do I have to heat it in a different vessel and then pour it into the bottle?

I don't want to ruin the formula (or scald my babies) by heating it improperly, but, since I'd be keeping open rts in the fridge, I have to warm it enough to take the chill off!

    Thanks!

I usually place the bottle in a cup of really hot water for a minute or until it is warm enough--In a pinch I have used the microwave with the cap off- but I dont really like to do that

I was told never to microwave formula because it breaks down the proteins in the formula. I used a bottle warmer to heat the RTF formula, or like the PP said you can put it in a cup of hot water.

GL with your migraines...I hope you are able to get some releif!

A second vote for the cup of hot water. I was told not to use a microwave because it could have really hot spots in the formula, and could burn your little one.

:hug99: I hope your migraine is over soon.

Same here, we usually put it in hot water.

Ditto pp's. I put it in a cup of hot water for a minute or two to take the chill off if its been in the fridge. But if its room temp, I probably just give it to them.

I agree, never put it in the microwave. We do the same, either a bottle warmer or a cup of very hot water. I hope you do ok with your migranes, maybe the new med will work.
