My DS is nearly 23months old, so I thought I would post in the 2-4yr forum instead of 2 yr forum. I am freaking out today. My DS has been diagnosed with a hyrdrocele (fluid sack in groin) and an inguinal hernia on the right side. They found it about 4 months ago, and the Dr said it was small and just to leave it for a bit and see what it did. well, we took him in for a re-check about 3 months later and it had gotten bigger, so they said it needed surgery. I live in the Middle East, and my dr said he only trusts 1 pediatric surgeon in our whole city to fix it, so we had to wait about a month to get him in with that dr. And, now the surgery is scheduled for tomorrow morning.
I am worried though because DS just started crying out of the blue today, he was upset and I had to give him tylenol, and he kept kind of grunting (he does not normally cry or grunt, so this is unusual behavior for him). he grunted for about 10 minutes before finally falling asleep for his afternoon nap. We are taking him in this afternoon for an appt with the anesthesiologist to see if he is "fit" for surgery, but I am completely freaked out that he may have another condition right now (cold, flu, ear infection etc) that could cause problems during the surgery.
We can not feed him tomorrow morning either, and he wont go in for surgery until at least around 10 or 11, so I know he is going to be screaming "hungy, hungy" tomorrow. So, I guess I am just overall dreading this experience.

All of mine have had minor surgery and had to fast the morning before. I can tell you that I was more worried about it then they were. It did not phase them one bit. We had tubes put in our boys ears at 18 months and we had to be at the surgery center at 7am. They didnt go back for anesthesia until about 9:30. Not once did they ask for food. They were so entertained and stimulated in the hospital environment. Hang in there Momma. I bet they will surprise you.

To top it off, today we had to rush DS into the hospital because he was breathing really shallow and kind of grunting, crying a lot and totally lethargic (which he has NEVER been). So they checked it out, thought the hernia had become worse and were ready to do surgery, until they checked with an ultrasound to find out that it wasn't his hernia, but instead it appears to be an ear infection. Ugh - everything I read says NOT to do surgery when they have an ear infection. But, the doctors are saying that as long as he doesn't have a temperature tomorrow morning then they will go ahead with the surgery....I am so confused...

thanks for all your support, I really appreciate it.

what a crazy 48hrs its been! We took DS into the hospital yesterday morning because when he woke up he didn't have a temperature (from the supposed ear infection), and they said to bring him in for surgery if he didn't have a fever. So, they did go ahead with the surgery after all, it is now done, over and he is recovering nicely.
It was a stressful morning though, we had him in for surgery at 8am, but he didn't actually have the surgery until around 10:45am, so it was a few hours of waiting. And, they would not let me into the recovery area! Ugh, they promised me that they could "sneak" me in, but of course when the time came to go in, the anesethesiologist who promised me I could come in, was not available! Then DS was suppose to be out of recovery in like 10 to 15 minutes, but it took them over an hour to release him (which freaked us out, as we kept waiting and waiting), they said it took him longer then normal to come around. Finally I got to see him, he was calm and laying in the crib hugging his teddy bear, but when he saw me he lost it. I ended up holding him the rest of the day (even for 2hrs while he slept). But, as of today I would say he is 95% back to normal - wow, how quickly kids can recover from surgery. We are still treating the ear infection, and that seems to be healing now too.

Thanks for all your support : ) Now I am off to have another nap, because the lst 48hrs has literally wiped me out!
