Our baby boy has a cold, and is on day 4. The last two days, all he wants to do is sleep. I can't get him to eat much at all. Today, he slept until 10:30 am, napped from 11:30 to 1:30 and then back down at 3:15 and is still sleeping (it's 6:15 pm here). I've only managed to get ~ 10 oz in him all day long. I don't know when I should call the pedi.. what volume is needed for him not to get dehydrated?

Poor little guy. When he is awake, though, he's as happy as can be (just with a cough and a stuffy nose).

Any experience with this? How long will it last--is there anything I can do for him to help him eat? (he doesnt' seem to be in too much discomfort--he's just really sleepy and not interested in eating)??

BTW, his sister hasn't yet caught the cold. Since we're 4 days in, can I assume she won't get it?

    Thanks!!!!

Annalise didn't eat really well in May when she had a cold. She would have been six months old then. She ate more than 10 oz. though. I would definitely give the pedi a call tomorrow morning. It's always good to go over symptoms and get advice/reassurance. I'm sure you'll get more great tips! Hang in there :hug99: .

I would call the pedi. if things don't change, soon. You can tell if they are getting enough liquid by how many wet diapers he is having each day, and I expect your pedi. is going to ask you about that. Four days of not eating well might not be enough to get him seen, but I would call to check.

If his nose is all stopped up, it's probably hard for him to eat and breathe at the same time. Have you had any luck with a bulb syringe and some saline drops? I'm thinking if you can get his nose opened up soon, he might be more interested in eating.

Good luck, and please keep us posted! :hug99:

When mine would get stuffy, I would use a few drops of saline in their nose, wait a few minutes, and then suck out their noses with the bulb syringe. I would do it before feedings, and it would usually help them eat a little better.

Is he still having wet diapers? Don't hesitate to call the ped if you are worried. :hug99:

Thanks ladies.. he ended up taking another 10 oz in the evening over the course of a couple of hours, so I think he's OK. So far today, he's been eating OK.

I did try the saline drops, and I think that helped!

My two are older than yours but they both have a horrible cold right now and it is very very hard to get food in them. They are usually little piggies when it is feeding time. But, the past two days they have not wanted to eat much.

Glad to hear they are doing better. It's probably moot now, but thought I would share anyways.... Our first week of daycare we got a real killer of a cold - 5 days of misery and fever, and even my hubby who never gets sick came down with it. We all still have the cough from it 6 weeks later.

Anyways... back to the point - one of the boys stopped eating all together despite the saline drops and everything else. Litterally he went from 25-30 oz a day to 16 one day, and 4 the next. We hauled our butts into the pedi , again, as soon as possible and after going round and round with them (first time mom, but he's dehyrdated you have to do something! Not in a few days. Did you hear me?? He isn't eating! He's dehydrated!) we learned that medically children can dehyrdate really quickly. Keep track of the number of diapers, and google online there is a dehydration check list (dry mouth, skin hanging on them, etc.), but that the doctors won't do anything until they lose 10% of their body weight. Mine lost 7% in 2 days. He lost almost a pound. At that point they will put them on an IV to get them rehydrated. Luckily my sons immune system kicked in before we got to that point. But it was terrifying. I hope we never have to go through anything like it again.
