the past week or so my LOs have been napping longer in the am (sometimes 2 hours) and then they are cranky around 2 when they are supposed to nap and then stay awake until about 430.
we tried 1 nap today and it lasted 1hr45mins. when will it extend?

When we did the transition, the first two weeks were difficult since their naps were still early in the day, shorter, and inconsistent. After the first two weeks they extended to 2.5 to 3 hours and became later in the day and extremely consistent . For the first few weeks, we changed their bedtime to an hour earlier than usual since the children were ready for bed by that time. I hope this helps. By the way, the best advice I got to help me through the transition came from this site. Another mom told me to keep the kids really busy all morning, feed them, and put them to bed. That's what we did. I remember I went out to the park at their usual nap time and kept them busy until I was ready for them to go down for their new nap time.

    what was your new naptime?
my LOs have been waking around 7 and generally go down for their first nap around 10. today we kept them up until noon.

Mine changed from 2 naps to 1 around 13 months. When they were taking 2 naps they'd take a morning nap for about 1.5 hrs then an evening nap at the same time. Then they started taking a late morning/early afternoon nap at about 11:30 or 12 for about 2-3 hours. Now they seem to be changing again (at almost 16 months) to a 2-3 hour nap starting around 1 or 2 o'clock. I just go with their flow on the napping.

    So now they're:

    8:30am awake
    1:00pm(ish) nap
    3:00 or 4:00pm awake
    8:30 or 9:00pm nighty night

I did not go to one nap until 15-16 months...mine had been boycotting their am nap for about three weeks when I finally gave in and went to one nap. It was a couple of weeks of short naps and then it started to extend from 1 hour to close to three hours.
    7:30-8-up for the day
    1:00 nap until 3 or 4
    7:30-8-bedtime

That has been our schedule since 15 months.

i thought they might be ready for 1 nap bc their afternoon nap was becoming later and later and more difficult to put them down for. their morning nap is pretty good.
should i not drop down to 1 nap?

Try it. Put them down when you see they're starting to get tired. Get them up when they wake up. Then if they get too tired way before bedtime you'll know either a) it's too soon to switch to 1 nap or b)they need a few days to get used to it. You can always go back to 2 naps if it doesn't work out.

I dropped to one nap/day at about 12 months for exactly the reasons you are stating - the morning nap was great, 2 hours, but then they wouldn't nap in the afternoon. I remembered from HSHHC that you should protect the afternoon nap, so I started keeping the girls awake and just doing 1 nap/day. Initially they went down around 11:30am. For the first week I only managed about 1 to 1 1/2 hr naps but by the second week they were consistently napping for 3 hours. Around 15 months their naptime shifted to 12pm (noon), still between 2 to 3 hours consistently. Now, I find that I am gradually moving their nap back to 12:30pm, although today they were super tired & went down again at noon. One of my girls definitely needs more sleep than her sister - typically, she naps for 3 hours and her sister anywhere from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 hours. I don't let either girl sleep past 3pm or they never go down at night (evening bedtime is between 7 & 7:30pm). I always put them down together, but if Fiona wakes up early then I take her out and we have a little one-on-one time (they sleep in the same room)

Hope this helps! Hang in there!
