dropping third nap?

I looked at the first year handbook awhile ago and there was something about the percentage of kids who dropped the third nap by age.

When did your kiddos start taking only 2 naps a day? Did you try to push the afternoon nap later or did you make bedtime earlier (yes I've read HSHHC).

    Thanks, Leighann

My kiddos are still taking three naps and they are 10 months old. Mine just weren't ready to go to 2 when I tried it. I moved thier bedtime to 7:30 instead of 7:00 b/c of the three naps.

So I guess I can't really answer your question. But I am going off of how my babies funtion and what they seem to need.

Thanks for writing this!!! I thought mine were giving up their third nap, but that are currently passed out on the blanket on the floor right now- fell asleep at 5:30 in the middle of playing. Guess we'll go to bed later tonight

Between 6 and 9 months just 16% of kids are doing a third nap. By 9 months it should be dropped as not to interfere with bedtime (according to HSHHC that is).

My boys do a third nap if the second nap is crappy (usually is these days for some reason). But it's a real struggle to get them to go down - usually we end up doing it in the stroller.

It was around 9 months, I think. They were pretty much already not taking a 3rd nap at daycare, though (since much earlier), just because the DCP could never get them to go to sleep again.

Like PP said, we usually did it in the stroller. Otherwise they wouldn't fall asleep. But if it was only 5:00 and they were really cranky, we'd stick them in the stroller for 45 minutes.

We didn't adjust bedtime at all -- it's been 6:30-7 since they were 3 months old. The timing of the midday nap has fluctuated, but I don't think we changed it specifically when they dropped the 3rd nap.

Mine take at least 3 naps per day, sometimes 4 if the others have been short.

Mine dropped their third nap around 8/9 months. They now take two at 9ish and 2ish, bed at 7:30.

Mine dropped the third nap around 7 months. We did have to move their bedtime up to about 6pm because they were just begging to go to bed. Now about 3 months later they stay up until about 6:30-7 and then off to dreamland.

Just dropped it a few weeks ago at 8.5 months.

We were putting them right back to bed after their 6:30 am bottle. When they stopped falling asleep in their cribs after that bottle (lots of talking), we just turned on the lights in their room and now they play in their cribs and chat from 7 to 8 am (until breakfast) instead of sleeping.

    Next nap is 9:30.

Afternoon nap is 2:15 or 2:30.

If we are lucky, they sleep 1.5 hours each nap. But only if we are lucky!
Bath, bottle, bed starts at 6, asleep by 6:45.

i think we dropped it about 10.5 months. DD was ready, and we made DS ready ;)
sometimes, if we are out runnign errands, he might nod off for 10 mins. or so in the car, but that's it. we did have to adjsut bedtime forward a little, and it is usually by 7pm now.

Mine haven't had a 3rd nap in a couple of weeks. They used to nap at 8:30, 12:30 and 4. The few times I've tried to get a 3rd nap out of them it would either take almost an hour for them to fall asleep (either they were crying or it just took forever for them to settle) and bedtime would be all messed up. So instead I just decided no more 3rd nap and use that time to have an extended period out of the house :) We will go to the mall/run errands etc. To compromise though bedtime has been moved up to 6/6:30pm depending on how good their second nap was. Today was a 6pm bedtime ;)

Dax is still taking his 3rd nap at 6.5 months old. The girls dropped it at about 7 months.

Mine dropped the third one around 8 months. I didn't have to do anything, they just started sleeping a lot longer during the second nap and were not as fussy during the late afternoon, which showed me they were ready.

The girls dropped their third nap around 6-7 months. The other two naps started getting a little bit longer and that third nap was getting later and later until they just stopped taking it on their own.

Dropped it at 4 months combined with an early (6 pm) bedtime. My oldest dropped it at 6 months, but I was a little more rushed to get them on the same schedule so I "pushed" the twins a little more. It worked out well.

According to Weissbluth, 3rd nap should be dropped around 9 months of age. When I went in (I saw his colleague this time) she also asked me whether they were already on 2 or 3. I can't imagine still having 3 naps! I can't wait until they drop the morning nap ... a few more months though (my oldest was 18 months!).
