Dropping the AFTERNOON nap?

I'm at a loss when it comes to my boys naps now. They are 17 months old and still take 2 naps a day but their schedule has gotten really weird.
We are a pretty strictly scheduled house because if they didn't nap at the same time I think I would poke my eyes out :) For a long time they have been napping at 9:30 and 1:30 for about an hour each time. They go to sleep for the night at 6:15 and wake up around 7:15 with no night waking so they really are good sleepers.
I thought they were showing signs that they could drop to one nap so we started moving the first nap later until we got to the point that they were going down for one nap at about 11:00 - 11:30. But then they would still only sleep for about an hour and they were absolute wildmen in the afternoon/evenings. What I'm starting to realize is that they really are still ready for a nap at about 9:45 (eyerubbing, yawns, quiet playing) so I'm putting them to bed since it seems like they need it and they are sleeping until 11 or 11:30. We're trying to do a short afternoon nap - it only last about 30 minutes.
So I'm stymied. Isn't this opposite of what they're "supposed" to be doing? Did anyone else have their kids drop the afternoon nap instead of the morning?

Mine! I knew my girls were ready to go to one nap a day when at 22 months they started fighting the afternoon nap. We gradually moved the morning back later and later and tried to do super fun things in the morning to keep them from being really crabby. Eventually the nap moved to after lunch and right now we have lunch around 12ish and they nap around 1ish. GL!

We also dropped the afternoon nap and gradually shifted the morning nap later. Our switch was completed at 21 months though they were unpredictable on naps for quite a while before that. I would have shifted them sooner except that they were very prone to confusional arousals / night terrors and they still needed two naps on most days.

I had the same problem with the afternoon nap, that's why I switched to one nap at 12.30pm. It was hard at first to keep them up until then but they got used to it pretty fast.

Thank you all, this is making me feel better. First because I was getting the impression that my kids were getting pretty old for two naps - even though i know you have to do what they need to do, not what other people tell you to do but the "Wow, they STILL take two naps?!" comments were getting annoying. Also, its just nice to hear that my kiddos aren't the only ones that are doing this!

A wishes she still got two naps. And my two go down for a nap from 10:30 - 12:30 every day.

Believe me, if I had my way, mine would still be taking two naps a day. They now nap from 1-4. I hope yours do well with the change to one nap!!

Mine dropped the afternoon nap, and we moved the morning nap back. After a couple weeks, they adjusted and slept 3 to 3.5 hours. Now, it's more like 2 to 2.5.

Mine have dropped their afternoon nap also. Right now they are napping from 10:00 - 12:30 and then eating lunch. It is kind of a pain b/c they wake up STARVING! But they just cannot make it past 10:00 a.m. yet. I'm sure they'll make it past lunchtime eventually....hopefully!

Amen to the annoying "they still take TWO naps?!" comments! For people who had one kid at a time, it may seem abnormal, but I work full time evenings & get home by midnight! I'm cheering them on for the 'two-a-day' naps! (selfish? maybe. a God send on 'bad days'? YUP!) I know the day is coming real soon, when a nap gets dropped & they're starting to fight off the afternoon naps!! I thought I was going crazy but starting tomorrow... thanks to the advice of you wonderful, wonderful, MIND saving people... we're movin' naps around! (I'll take one long one over a 45 min a.m. nap & a 20 min p.m. nap any day!!) :) (selfish? YUP, but it has something to do with my sanity too!!) :)
