Dropping a nap

    Hi-

I was just curious if any of you are having problems with dropping a nap with your twins. My twins are 17 months old. Like clock work they have been on 2 naps a day going down at 9:30am for about an hour and then again at 1:00-1:30 pm for about 2 hours. My DD dropped her morning nap about a month ago. It was harder for me to adjust than it was for her. She would just usually want to go down for the afternoon nap a little earlier (around 12:30). She will now take a long afternoon nap for about 2.5-3 hours. The problem is that this transition is not going so well for my DS. Even though my DD dropped her nap a month ago, he has continued taking the 2 naps a day. I have noticed over the last 2 weeks that his morning nap was getting shorter and shorter (only about 20-30 minutes). However, this week he doesn't want to go down at the usually 9:30 time rather 10:30-11:00. This presents 2 problems.....#1 if I put him down at 10:30-11:00 then he will sleep for 1 1/2-2 hours and then he will not want to take an afternoon nap....which isn't necessarily a big deal except for the fact that he misses lunch and he tends to get cranky in the evening. Bedtime is 8pm and he will start getting fussy around 5:30-6:00 which is too late for a nap at that point. Problem#2 I want the twins to nap at the same time so that I have some free time during the day.

Have any of you gone through this? Any thoughts or advice is much appreciated?

    Thanks!

I would put them both down at the same time, at 12:30. It might take a couple of weeks of him getting used to the new schedule, but he will adjust.

Can you keep your DS up through the morning, have lunch a little earlier if necessary, and then put them both down? I definitely agree that it's important (for your sanity) for them to sleep at the same time. I did have trouble keeping them awake until lunchtime for the first few months after we dropped the morning nap (especially if we were coming home from someplace in the car or stroller right before lunch), but I never let them take a nap between 10:00 a.m. and lunchtime if I could possibly help it.

I agree, hold DS off until 12:30. We just got through the transition, it was about a week of crankies pushing them back to that time for napping, and then another 2 weeks to get that nap to go from 1 hour to 2+ hours (knocking on wood, they've only napped that long the last 3 days). I just did alot to keep them busy at that 10:00ish time when they would get cranky, I added in a snack, we watched videos, ran errands and once they got over the hump to lunchtime they did well. Now its no big deal for them to stay up that late.

Good luck its a tricky transition!!
