Drinking enough water

So, I've read everything from the regular adult daily recommendation for water (8 8 oz glasses) to double or triple that when pregnant with twins! I am having a hard time drinking enough water I think. I don't keep super specific track of how much I'm taking in, but I feel like it's barely the regular recommended amount and my pee is rarely super clear. I don't know why it's so hard, I just hate drinking water these days! Before getting pregnant I loved drinking water all day long and was always very hydrated, but now I fear that I'm constantly slightly dehydrated or close and being almost 18 weeks now and reading about people's contractions, etc I know that it is REALLY important for me to be getting tons of water in.

Any secrets or recommendations on how much to drink and how to drink it if you're feeling kind of grossed out by drinking lots of water?

I'll ask my peri on Tuesday what his specific recommendation for me is on oz per day...but please tell me what you ladies are doing :)

I constantly have a Nalgene water bottle with me. It's 32 oz and I think I re-fill it usually atleast 4 times a day. I've realized that if I don't carry the water with me everywhere I end up not drinking very much, but if it's there I just grab it and drink it!

Good luck getting all of your water!!

I keep a Nalgene bottle with me at all times as well. Plus, I keep large water bottles filled in the fridge so I have some cool water to drink.

It is really hard for me to drink that much water. When I feel particularly sick of water, I'll put some lemon, lime, or orange slices in the water, squeezing some juice in first, to give it a little bit of flavor. That often helps to make it go down easier.

    Good luck!

I had to have it super cold with a lot of ice. Sometimes I'd pour about a quarter of the cup/bottle of juice then the rest water and ice for a change of pace. And I agree with keeping it handy at all times. I tried to get in a gallon a day but didn't always make it.

i drink aquafina, the 17 oz bottles...somewhere between 6 and 8 of them a day....when one is empty, i grab 2 more....i've given up drinking pretty much anything else...and honestly, to me, everything else is just too cloying on my tongue...it's almost as it's too thick (the drink) or something...

Toward the end of my pg, water made me sick so in order to keep hydrated I got the individual packets of Country Time Lemonade and added to a bottle of Aquafina. I know it's not the healthiest alternative, but it did keep me hydrated.

All liquid should count...so if you're drinking milk, juice, etc., count that.

I like club soda...especially with a slice of lime, but buy the low sodium if you can find it.

I can't have anything with sugar between meals because it makes the saliva machine go into overdrive, and I never eat aspartame, so the club soda is a nice change from plain water.

I'm trying daily to take in 8 16 oz. glasses of water. :hush:

-To keep track of what I've drank, I use tally marks on today's date of every glass I go to fill.
-Then, when drinking it not with a meal, I try to count to 20 (which is usually about 1/2 a glass) so I'm not sipping it.
-I eat 2 cups of ice cream a day (part of Dr. Luke's book) & drink a lukewarm-ish glass with each serving (helps get the ice cream down)
-With lunch/dinner, I try to refill the glass mid-way through the meal (lazyness is part of my problem).

Good luck- it's not easy, but you can do it!

I remember it being soooo hard to consume so much water!!
I always carried a big water bottle around with me everywhere I went like the others mentioned - when I couldn't take it anymore I would have big glass of flavored water which made me feel like I was having something more exciting than just plain ol' water :good:

    Just do your best!

My OB actually said not to worry about it and to drink as much water as I felt comfortable doing. He said there are no established medical guidelines. I still strive for 100oz per day based on what I read, but I guess I am less militant about it than at first since hearing that from him.

Thanks everyone for the tips and experiences. I went out today and got myself a 32 oz Nalgene style bottle and will strive to drink that down 3-4 times a day. I also need to start drinking more of it earlier on in the day as well though I think as I am up so many times during the night to pee...it's driving me nuts!

Maybe try to throw in some of those crystal light packets in your water. They don't have any sugar and make the water nice and flavored. Maybe lay out your packes for the day(I think one packet makes 16oz), then you know you have to finish a certain amounts of packets to get your required amount of water for the day

After they discovered prepregnancy I am very prone to UTI's I got chewed for not drinking enough water. I had a UTI almost immediately after I found I was pregnant.

We have a water filter in our house so I don't have to buy bottled water. Each morning I take a gallon pitcher and fill it and place in fridge. Before I go to bed each night that pitcher has to be empty. Trust me the hubby makes sure I down it all. At night I wear pads just in case I can't make it to the potty in time too.
I have two half gallon mugs I carry with me everywhere with a straw. For some reason I found it easier to down that much water drinking through straws.
If I'm sitting somewhere doing nothing I make sure I sip away at it. Riding in the car, on the computer, watching tv, or out visiting friends.
It just took a boatload of determination that I was going to do this for my twins.

I bought some flavored water thingys but found out quickly they really are bad for my acid reflux. So, watch out with those sometimes.

Wow! I am feeling horribly guilty right now because I struggle to get down 1-2 of the 32 oz bottles a day. I have got to step it up now that the nausea is getting a little better...

Once again you and I are in the same boat...I barely drank any water during my morning sickness phase and luckily now it's easier, but still not 4 X 32 oz bottles easy...that is going to be an everyday challenge for me, but one that I have to conquer!

I also don't really like the flavoured water thing, nor am I a fan of juice which is probably why I don't like flavoured water. I used to LOVE water!!! Not sure why it's changed, maybe it's jut being hyper aware of how much I have to drink now...I still love coffee though lol.

Hi again k2daho. :) Yes, again in the same position. I also used to LOVe water and now have to force it down. Getting easier but still hard to do. Good luck with your appointment tomorrow! Keep me updated. My name is Kim, btw.

Maybe carry round a lil pic of an Ultrasound to "help" you remeber WHO you are drinking the water for.

My DW quit smoking Cold Turkey after she found out she was prego. She said it was a piece of cake. Anytime she felt like a smoke, she looked at it...and in an instant...the desire for a smoke went right out the window.

I keep telling myself that it's for the twins, but it wasn't smoking that's my problem. It's that I miss an occasional beer especially when bbqing.
Also, the DH keeps telling me no sex and no soda. :gah: I want this over with!!!! I'm going to be a raving lunatic and refuse water, healthy food, and veggies once these kids are here. :grr:

    You should do that 100%

I'm pretty sure you will have earned it...

haha no sex and no soda! Well I have no sex since my husband isn't here right now and the OB said not to anyways...actually he also said "don't put anything in your vagina" which I thought was oddly hilarious haha. I do allow my self the occasional soda though...gotta have something and sometimes I am just craving a tiny bit of Pepsi so badly!

Pitbullz - I like the idea of carrying the pic and looking at it...I think I will try that...Maybe I can tape a pic to the outside of my water bottle!

I find it fascinating that everyone has a hard time drinking enough water cause I cant seem to get enough of the stuff. I feel so parched and dry all the time. I cannot go half an hour without a glass of water or I feel like I've been crawling through the Mojave Desert. My doc says that I'm not dehydrated though so it must just be my body craving what I need.

Ha...I was just going to say that...Perfect Idea...tape it to the bottle...

Yeah...keep track...maybe push hash marks on the fridge or bottle(if it's just a plastic "throw-away"), or something...

Good Luck...we expect progress reports...or at least I do :)
