Drink TOO much Milk!

Just had our 2 year healthy check up. Our guys must be milk guzzlers!
We need our own cow for the backyard with the 3 gallons a week they have been drinking.

Well, we just heard they need no more than 24 oz a day...Right now I think they are closer to 30 oz. We don't do juice. And water has been alright.

Anyone have any good weaning from the guzzling ideas? They keep on asking for More when I limit it!

Oh, we also just got approval to change from whole milk to 2%. So far, so good.

I have a friend whose daughter always drank too much milk. It was all she would drink. So, my friend just started mixing it with a bit of water, so she was still getting the same amount of fluids but not all of it was milk!

Jack is a milk guzzler; that's all he'd drink if I let him. I decided to only offer milk only at meals, and at snacks or between times he only gets water or diluted juice. Sometimes he puts up a fuss and demands milk, but I tell him "this is what I'm offering, take it or leave it" and he usually takes it. ;)

DS is a big milk drinker too! He would drink as much as I'd let him. I also tend to limit milk to snacks and meals. Also, since they are starting to use small regular cups some, I put just a little milk in one of those for dinner. And their sippy cups just have water. (This is different on weekends or days they don't go to daycare. On those days they get some milk in their cups too.)

one of mine used to drink about 40 oz/day of milk. so i started watering it down--down to 50% and it never bothered him. he also drinks another ten oz/day of water, too... when we cut out all but the sleep/wake bottles he cut back a bit--though he'll still guzzle up to 16 oz in a sitting. i don't water it down as much but we use 1% a lot of the time (though he drinks a lot of goat's milk). anyways, the watering down helps.

    gl!

Our pedi also said to limit it to no more than 24oz a day, but my girls would drink it all day if I let them. I like the idea of watering it down. Or if you can stand the transition period of whining, make a new milk schedule. My girls only get milk when they wake up, at lunch and at dinner. The rest of the time its water.

It's always so funny how pediatricians don't even agree with each other... ours both said no more than 16oz after 1! But yeah it's difficult, I'd say as long as it doesn't impact their overall appetite it's not a big deal.

I'd think about when they tend to drink a lot of it... for example, if they get a cup during meals, I'd wait until they're mostly done with their meal to give them milk... do they get milk with snacks? I'd leave a cup of water available at all times instead etc.

Just an added note: We are also still exploring filling&dumping. You should see the mess from dumping water or milk out around snack time!

Thanks for all the great suggestions! Great to hear we aren't the only ones needing a cow.

THis is what we did (do). The concern is that sometimes milk will replace foods in a childs diet (they drink milk and then do not eat as much as they need) . It can also cause constipation!

Surprisingly, we still do whole milk for our DC (one is lactose free so LF milk) since they are small and skinny. Pedi said to limit intake as well to make sure they are getting enough nutrients from other foods, as well as encourage water.

We do diluted juice & water as well.

They are pretty good about milk only at breakfast, lunch, and dinner (sometimes with snack) now.

This is us...same recommendation too for 16oz after 1. I only offer milk at meals and only bring out the cups about half way through the meal, otherwise, they fill up on milk.
