so i noticed my girls doing an interesting thing during tummy time the other day - they would raise their bums in the air, then drop their bums & lift their heads & legs off the floor. i know it's still really early days, but could this be a prelude to crawling?

It could be. Some babies crawl as early as 5 months!

Mine do that, too...and they squirm like crazy. It's so funny b/c they used to hate tummy time. I could only do it for a few minutes at a time, but now they rock, try to roll, and lift up whatever they can - head, chest, bum, legs. It's so cute. They get really happy, too. I guess it's getting their muscles ready, right? I don't know whether we should be excited or scared! Probably a little of both :)

I think it sounds like one of the first things they do getting ready for it. My Ds is now on to rocking and launching and thinking it will be any time now.

Mine started creeping around like that starting between 5 and 6 months old. They actually continued that for a LONG time and didn't crawl the 'conventional' way until they started pulling up and cruising at 9 months. But just because they didn't crawl "like real babies" (as DH and I would say) didn't mean they couldn't get around quickly :) Start thinking about baby proofing momma!!!

I would say yes. It's all prelude to the inevitable! Mine are so funny... Stefan sticks his tushy in the air and scoots himself with his head of the floor. Molly scoots herself around backwards! When they first began trying to get the hang of it, they would lift up on their arms, then fall forward, move legs up in the air like they were crawling and then move back to the up on their arms postition. Couldn't quite get it all together... still don't yet, but I imagine it's only a matter of time!

That is how mine started crawling. They started to army crawl first - sounds like your girls are on their way, look out!!!
