    Hi Girls,

I am going for a planned C-Section in 2 1/2 weeks, i was wondering when the babies are born and if everything is going well, does the colostrum fill-up babies tummies? since it takes about 3 days for the milk to come in? I really don't want to supplement with formula if i don't have to. What happens to the twins and how long does colostrum comes in for? or until day 3 all you get is colostrum. Since the time is coming closer i am getting anxious and nervous. Please help me out.

Please do shed some light on this topic and also what happens after the C-Section if everything goes well with twins. My son was also born with c-section almost 9 years ago but i have forgotten most everything about it.

    Thanks so much girls,

    Mina

I can't help with the C-section stuff, but you will have colustrum for 1-4 days or so. Since you've been pregnant before, I think your milk comes in sooner than someone who has never been pregnant before. My twins were my first and I had them on Monday morning and had milk on Thursday morning. But, anyway, yes, all the babies need is the colustrum and as long as you are nursing every two hours or so, you'll start making milk and should have plenty. Newborns tummies are quite tiny and they don't need much.

Good luck with your C-section and enjoy having newborn twins.

Congrats on your twins! You must be so excited to meet them.

Your milk should come in about the same with a c-section as with a vaginal delivery. Assuming the babies are healthy and nursing well, your colostrum is all they need until your milk comes in. (Think of it like cavepeople times - Enfamil sure didn't exist back then, and the human race survived! ) Their stomachs are only about the size of a marble when they're born, and all they do is sleep, so they don't need much yet.

Trust your body, it knows what to do! :) And stop by here anytime with questions, and to let us know how everything is going.

There is a lot of misinformation out there. Your babies do not need much initially. My milk came in after my section on day 5. The twins never had any formula. The colustrum is all they need. By all means use their pumps after some feedings to get your supply going. Get the babies to your breast as soon as you are able. Ask for help. Breastfeeding two is much different than one. Try to tandem feed in the hospital where you will have help. I had an incredible nursing staff who really helped me when the twins were born. Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

It seems impossible, but that tiny bit of colostrum is really enough! Believe me, they'll eat often enough that the little bit will tide them over.

As for the post c-section, let your nurses know that you want to nurse as soon as you can after the surgery. I think I had Sarah with me within 45 minutes or so. (Matthew was in the NICU for a couple hours.)

One recommendation I'd make is letting the babies go to the nursery at night. The nurses will bring them to you to eat, but they'll take care of everything else. This will allow you to get at least a little bit of rest so you can concentrate all your efforts on nursing. Also, if you have one that has a tough time latching on, try expressing some colostrum into a spoon and feeding that way. We had to do this with Matthew. We kept trying to get him to latch, but often had to resort to the spoon. Eventually he got it, though, and he is my little chunker now. It was just better than resorting to a bottle of formula.

    Good luck and congratulations!

I loved my hospital experience...though there were a few things I wasn't happy about. The first day I had them, they supplemented my little boy since he would latch on and then just sit and not suck. I couldn't really say anything...I was so completely out of it, due to a reaction to pain meds...I remember it happening, but don't really remember why they said to do it and all that.

One night I did send them to the nursery, since I really was not getting any sleep...and they said they would bring them back to eat. And it was like 5 hours later! There were a couple times this happened, they went for 5-6 hours without getting anything in their tummies, and they nurses said that it was fine, they would let me know when they wanted to eat. But they ended up losing ALOT of weight...and the pediatrician said that that was in fact NOT okay. I was upset with that...I didn't think it was okay, but they kept telling me it was, and then wouldn't bring the babies back for like 5 hours (and I was sleeping). So that's one thing I would keep an eye on if you send them to the nursery.

My milk came in on day 5 or 6...they were my first.
