Hello - My mother got me a food processor for Christmas so I could make my own baby food. Do any of you do this and do you find it easier then buying the food. And can you recommend any books or websites that offer information on how to do it.
    Thanks Stacy

Here is a site that gives recipes, and ways to store your food.

It is very simple, a lot simplier than I thought it would be. I usually make it in about 15 minutes, put it in ice trays and the once they are frozen (before I go to bed), I pop them out and put them in baggies in the freezer. Good luck! Good money saver.

The website the PP posted is awesome. I made my own baby food and it was very cheap and easy!

My duo is on all table foods now.

I make my own baby food but I also buy jars here and there to make things easier (especially for babysitters) Making your own food gives SO MUCH more variety for food choices. Gerber doesn't offer that many fruits and veggies...there are so much more to make. I started by making food that I couldn't buy such as mangos, papaya, collard greens, etc. Now I make almost everything - it is really easy once you start doing it. I use the book SuperBaby Food and couldn't survive without it. It has a month by month list of foods to introduce and details on how to choose, clean, cook, puree the foods. I learned some things I didn't know like when you buy asparagus, choose the thicker stalks since they have more nutritional value - didn't know that one. Here is a link

Have fun - making your food is great and healthy

I also make my own baby food. (I use Wholesomebabyfood.com btw) It takes me an hour every few weekends to make enough baby food to last for a month or more, and it is much cheaper. I'm not sure exactly but last time I spent maybe $10 for a months worth of food for the both of my guys. One time saver I've found is having A LOT of ice cube trays!

We got a food processor as a wedding gift and never used it until I started making baby food. It is so easy and saves money. Plus like PP said you can make food like mangos, avocado, etc. that you can't buy in jars. I use the Super Baby Food book. It is very informative.

    Good luck!

Yep - I thought I would never have time - but I feel so much better about the choices I can offer - but I do supplement w/jars if something is not in season like peaches weren't for us, so we did gerber peaches - and I was nervous about the nitrates in carrots - so I used the gerber version of those too...

I really like the book Mommy Made and Daddy too! I found it to be really comprehensive, but easy to get through - lots of ideas/recipes/guidlines...

I think it is a really neat idea. I admire the women/men who do make their own babyfood. For me, it was just impossible. It seemed like keeping my head above water the first year was hard. I just bought it, it was easier for me.

BUT if you can do it, then I say go for it!

I also make my own baby food (but keep a few jars handy in case I run out!). I use the Super Baby Food book and absolutely LOVE it. I did it for my son and never thought I'd have the time with the twins, but it's really not a big deal. It's really easy to do and if you make a lot and store it in the freezer, it doesn't take much time at all. You save a ton of money and know exactly what is going in your babies' mouths. And when they get older, you can make the texture more and more like table food to make the transition easier. I just love it, but that book really, really helped me get started.

    Good luck!

I do. I use the website that was already mentioned. I feel better knowing exactly what they are getting without added sugar, salt, or starch or chemicals.

I was making all of my own, but we are in the process of moving, and haven't been able to lately. I love it, it's really fun, and easy, and makes me feel good to be able to make the things that I am feeding them! [IMG]

I made my son's baby food and found the book Super Baby Food to be a great guide although I don't agree with all of its suggestions (eg, I used commercial cereal initially because it's fortified with iron and I don't agree with introducing nuts so early, etc) and it's a bit dense to get through because of how it's organized. It was a great guide for preparation and storing techniques though.
