At what point is Vanishing Twin Syndrome less of a threat? I am 12 weeks now, I go for my next ultrasound on June 21st, when I will be 14 weeks. If everything is good at that appointment, can I sort of stop worrying about that? I am so paranoid of one of my babies just disappearing. Does anyone have a website or link I can visit to get more information about when the risk of Vanishing Twin Syndrome decreases? Thanks in advance!

From what I've read, vanishing twin syndrome happens very early in pregnancy- around 5 or 6 weeks. Try not to worry... easier said than done, I know! Congratulations on your twins!!

I can't reference a site or anything right off for you to read yourself, but everything I've seen/read on this is that is doesn't happen after a fetal heartbeat is detected for both. If you've already seen that both have strong heartbeats, then you are in the clear for one to vanish! Now, on to something else to worry about! :)

My understanding is that this is something that happens very early, like before 8 weeks... I think you are in the clear with that one already!!! Congratulations! I know though I was worried about that too... I feel like I worry about something different at each turn! Good luck and relax!

We had an u/s at 6.5 weeks and a second u/s at 9.5 weeks. After the first one, my doctor said we should wait before telling everyone we were having twins, because we could lose one, even though we had seen two strong heartbeats. After the second one, he told us that the chance of losing one was less than 1%. So at 12 weeks, I would think that you are definitely in the clear!

Everything that I've read stated that it can happen anytime in the first trimester, but usually happens early on. HTH and congrats on your twins.

Like the PP's said, I think you are clear at 12 weeks!

My docs told me that by 12 weeks it was gone. We did not find out it was twins until 10 weeks preg.

My first ultrasound was at 9 weeks. That's when we found out there were two.

These are the only stats I could come up with which seems to go along with 12 weeks. I don't agree with the heart beat belief because I do know people who have heard both heartbeats and then one baby has vanished.

    QUOTE
Prior to 12 weeks the risk of loss of at least one fetus is:

    In a twin gestation – 36 percent
    In a triplet gestation – 53 percent
    In a quadruplet pregnancy – 65 percent
