I wante to use cloth diapers. Can I just use the pre-fold cloth ones, you know, the ones our moms used? Do I have to buy the new fancy ones (that are way to expensive)? Does anyone here use the old stuff? Does it work just as well?

I did not use the old ones, but the new ones. The old ones were flat fold, rather than a prefold or Chinese prefold. They are much less absorbant than the new ones. Of course you can use them. The vinyl covers are inexpensive too. You may want to try changing them more often. I would suggest trying once an hour until you get the feel of it. I would google search info. on using older styles of cloth diapers. I know you can find flat folds and VINYL covers at KMart, if you have one near you.

HERE is a website for Bird's Eye Flat Fold diapers, which you can find many places like WALMART. GL on whichever route you choose :).

I do sometimes, but I don't like the vinyl covers for them. By the time I bought the newer breathable covers, I figured it was almost as much as the BGs that I love. I use the diaper service quality prefolds mostly for inserts in my pockets now. You should check out some of the work-at-home-moms' pocket diapers on diaperswappers.com. Some of them look pretty good and they are less pricey. You'll also find lots of moms there using prefolds so check it out if you haven't.

For the amount of diapers I go through every day with these two, I figured out that getting enough BGs so I could wash every other day paid for itself in less than 18 weeks if I had been buying disposables. They are one size so technically they should last us for the long run and I haven't spent anything else (except a little to try out the thinner inserts) since.

I have a mountain of them, but I honestly don't like them very much, just for the fact that you have to change them more often as they seem less absorbant. I ended up stuffing them into cottonbabies socks to use as liners, and using them with covers (proraps - although not sure if my sp is right here). I've also used the chinese prefolds, which I found to be ok, but not my first choice. I still prefer the bum genius 3.0's, as they are much more absorbant, and very easy to use and wash. They do pay for themselves after a while.

We use Chinese prefolds, because we have a service. We put a variety of diaper covers over them, but don't like the vinyl ones. Those would be the cheapest. We prefer covers like bummis and proraps instead.

The reason things have changed since we were little is that they have improved the items. ;) Now they're easier to use, more absorbant, no diaper pins, etc. Also, if the prices are getting to you, check craigslist. Every now and then a mom will post on there selling her cloth diapering collection because her kids have PT'd. There are also forums you can go to like diaperswappers where you can buy gently used ones--might be a way to try a few out before investing a lot of money. :good:

There is also a trail package you can get...on jilliansdrawers.com. you do have to pay a deposit, they send you 1-2 of many different types of diapers, including the prefolds, Bumgenius pockets, and more...you try them out for a number of days and send them back, and get all your money back, less $10 (they keep that, as payment for the package). That way you can try all the different diapers to know which ones you'd like best, without having to buy them and then find out they didn't work!
