Does anyone just see an OB or do you also see a peri/MFM?

    Hi ladies.

I've been lurking on the boards for a while and am finally posting for the first time. I'm 18.5 weeks and have been seeing an OB exclusively but I've noticed that many expecting MoMs also see a peri or an MFM. My OB says he's comfortable handling multiple pregnancies and births but I'm wondering if I should be pushing for more monitoring. WWYD?

    TIA!

I was only seen by my OB........I was considered high risk also (if that helps).

I figured that if my doctor felt that I needed to be seen by a specialist, then he would refer me to one, until then, I didn't worry about it.

  3. I only see my OB as well and so far all is great only 28 days left

I guess I saw both if you considered my level two ultrasounds every 6 weeks a peri. My OB was VERY relaxed. He never insisted I take off work and he really treated me like a singleton pregnancy. I had no issues.

I saw only an ob and had a picture perfect pregnancy until my water broke at 31w/4d. The only thing that bothered me was she did not check my cervix ever but I didn't think too much about it as there were other MoM's whose ob refused to do it as well. Honestly, I'm not sure if it would have made a difference or not. My water breaking was a freak occurrence. I shifted while lying on the sofa to an almost squatting position using just my stomach muscles and my bag broke. I'm pretty sure my water wouldn't have broken if I had not used so much pressure with those muscles. If you're not high risk then I think you'll probably be fine.

    Good luck

Hi there! Congratulations on your pregnancy!!!
I only saw my OB throughout my whole pregnancy, and was considered in her 'high risk' category (and had a placenta previa as well).
I had appointments every 2 weeks throughout the pregnancy which gave me peace of mind.
The only time she asked for another opinion (from a peri) was the day before my scheduled c-section when she did my amnio done to make sure the lung development of the babies was okay before delivery. The peri said we were good to go :)
If anything would have gone wrong in delivery my hospital did have peri's/specialists available though ~

If you have any concerns or feel like you want/need to be monitored closer than you currently are I would def. talk to my dr. about it ~ It will make you feel better!

Good luck and let us know what happens! :)

I was wondering the same thing. I am 27 weeks now and just seeing my ob. I had never even heard of seeing someone else until I started looking on here too.

I've been seeing my OB and also a Peri. The Peri did the in depth sono at 20 weeks, and I actually see both of them this Wednesday. The OB for my regular 24 week visit and glucose test and the peri for a fetal echo. There aren't any indications that anything is wrong, I think its just standard procedure for multiples at my practice.

Hello!! At this point in my pregnancy I see the OB every two weeks and the specialist once a month for the big ultra sound I also see the specialist every 2 weeks for NST's. In the beginning I saw the OB once a month and the specialist once a month for the big ultrasound..I feel more comfortable this way, but I am pretty neurotic so I guess it depends on how comfortable you feel with your OB..It couldn't hurt to ask for a referral if you think you need it..

I am having mono/di twins and I have only seen an OB. She saw me every 3 weeks until I hit 20 weeks and now I go every 2. She does an u/s at every appt. I also have a level 2 u/s done every 3 weeks and the perinatologists on her team read those and write up the reports. Everything has gone great so far :)

With the twins, I saw only an OB. In fact, there is no peri in my city, If I needed one, I would have had to travel over 300 miles to do so. My boys were mono-di and this was discovered at 9 weeks. Because of the one placenta, I had an U/S every two to three weeks and an OB appt on the same schedule. At 28 weeks, I started having NST's twice a week at the OB's office.

I just see my OB...she suggested that I see someone off-base, but I don't feel comfortable trying to communicate with someone whose language I don't speak (Italian)...I'm seeing the head of the OB department, and leaving in a month for better care in Germany, so I think we're ok.

I see my OB every 4 weeks and I get an ultrasound in the Perinatology Dept. every 3-4 weeks, staggered with my OB appointments so that I'm seen every 2 weeks. When I get the u/s in peri, I don't necessarily see a peri. I see whomever is available (techs or nurses, mainly) and then the u/s and everything gets reviewed by a peri. A peri reviews my case regularly and orders a lot of my tests, as does my OB. Though I'm not seeing a peri regularly, I do feel well "cared for" - my OB even e-mailed me today regarding my blood test on Friday.

I only ever saw an OB and had an uneventful twin pregnancy. I worried after seeing how many ppl on this board saw a peri but my OB took great care of me, I didn't need to see a peri.

I see an OB who specializes in high-risk pregnancies. I've never felt the need to go to a peri.

I'm 18.5 weeks as well and saw a peri on Friday for a level 2 and to check my cervical length. My OB has been checking my length as well at every visit. I have to go every week for a cervical length check, but mine was short to start with, plus I've had a LEEP to shorten it even more. I will be seeing the peri quite often as well and possibly be getting a cerclage in the next week (I find out this afternoon).

My Dr said he sends all twins pregnancies to a peri - but just for a level 2 ultrasound.

    Congrats and good luck!

I actually just see a Peri - I'm considered high risk. I don't see a regular OB at all. My Peri delivers as well. I feel very lucky especially after seeing how many ladies have to see both. That seems like SO much work!

It really depends on the type of twins you are expecting and how your body is handling the pregnancy. If there is a chance that the twins are mono/di, then you should see a peri and get u/s at least every 2 weeks. If the twins definitely have their own placentas and you are not having any maternal complications, then you should be fine with your OB. Fraternal twins are usually not much more high risk than a singleton although they definitely don't make you feel that way. :)

I have only seen an OB, but I also have had a very uneventful pregnancy and my dr. doesn't think it is necessary for me to see anyone else.

I am 17 weeks and only see a peri. I go every week to the doctor's office. I see my peri every other week and the nurse/lab tech for transvaginal ultrasound on the opposite weeks. He is overly cautious, but that is ok with me.

I went to my regular OB clinic throughout the pregnancy. Once my first ultrasound at the hospital revealed we were having twins at 19+ weeks, all of my other ultrasounds were done at the peri clinic by their highly trained (must say awesome) ultrasound tech. The senior peri in the clinic came in to meet me at the first ultrasound there and told me he would be monitoring my pregnancy through the monthly ultrasounds but I would continue to go to my regular OB unless there were complications. I had a PTL scare at 33 weeks but they were able to stop it. At that point, I started going to the OB's office twice a week. Once was for monitoring and once for a regular appt. I carried the girls until 38 weeks.

I am new at this whole twin pregnancy thing-what is a level 2 ultraound? I have had two-one was early and a neonatologist came in and told me they were mono/di and everything looked good. The second was at 21w5d at my OB's office and everything looked great then too.

It's standard procedure in my OB's practice to refer multiple pregnancies to a peri for high-resolution u/s like the NT scan and the 20w level II structural scan. The u/s machine at the OB's office are pretty poor.
    So I'm seeing both OB & peri...and it's a LOT of appointments.

I first found out at 21 weeks it was twins, and from that point on I was seen by both my OB and MFM. It was reassuring knowing that I was being monitored so closely.

I see a perinatologist. I had two m/c before my daugther was born, so I was seeing him before I became pregnant with twins.

I only saw an OB for my prenancy and have no regrets.

If you are lucky to have a pregnancy like mine that is all you will need.

I only saw a OB my whole pregnancy and I was considered high risk. If your OB is comfortable with handling multiple pregnancies and seems like he is staying on tope of all possible issues then it should be fine.
