do yours spit when they brush teeth?

Am I the only one who hasn't introduced toothpaste yet?
Mine like to brush their teeth, but we have been doing only water because they swallow so much of it and don't spit it out.
I thought about the all-natural toothpaste, but what's the point if they swallow it?
Now that they go to daycare occasionally, I had to supply toothbrushes & paste.
Any advice on teaching them how to spit? I've tried to model it, but they don't seem to get it.

I used the 'beginners' toothpaste(the one with Little Bear on the tube) before they learned to spit. Now they used regular and I just put a pea-sized amount on their brushes. I brush their teeth first, and then let them do it, so most of the toothpaste ends up on their teeth.

My older DD didnt learn to spit until after the age of 3. I was told by the Ped and the Dentist that a small amount of fluoride toothpaste is fine to ingest. We used the Little Bear toothpaste until they all turned two and then went to the Oral-B kids toothpaste.

Mine are 3 and have no clue about spitting (though they do manage to spit at each other while they're playing -- oh joy). We use Tom's of Maine fluoride-free toothpaste. I think it helps get their teeth cleaner, and won't hurt them if they swallow it.

Our family dentist said don't let them have any fluoride toothpaste until you know for sure they won't swallow it. I told her Sarah was insisting on using "Daddy's toothpaste" these days, and she grudgingly agreed that I could give her a microscopic amount (just enough to get the taste), but not more.

Mine have just now started pretending to spit when they brush. We still do the toothpaste with no flouride. Of course, I've not pushed it either. I probably won't push the real toothpaste until this summer.

    Nope - no spitting here.
They don't understand that concept yet.
We still use the no-flouride toothpaste.

None of mine got spitting until they were 4 (I tried to get them to spit at 3 1/2 but it just wasn't happening). Even at 4 Bryony struggled with it for a few months and Luke (at almost 5) still struggles to spit properly.

We just moved over from the toddler paste to the Stages toothpaste. My guys are just starting to spit, but most of the toothpaste goes down to their tummies. I brush their teeth first and then they can go at it.

Ours do spit now. We are still using non-fluoridated toothpaste and will switch to one with fluoride soon. (I had purchased 3 tubes of the other kind) We first taught them to spit by using water and watching us do it. They caught on fairly quickly and actually look forward to doing it now. :)

Yes--very important to use non-flouride paste until they can effectively spit it out or you run the risk of fluorosis.

Thank you! I will go look for some non-fluoridated toothpaste the next time we go out!
What a relief, I thought I was the only one!

Nope <_< We keep trying and showing them but they aren't getting it...yet. We conitnue to use the trainer's toothpaste which has a little bit of flouride in it. I know it will happen eventually.

Nope. I brush their teeth first with just water, then I put a little ACT Jr. flouride rinse on their toothbrush and brush with that. It's such a small amount that it's not any more than would be left in your mouth if you were to gargle with it. And since we have well water, they do need at least some flouride. Oh, the ACT was the suggestion of their dentist.

With my older kids, we had city water so I didn't worry about flouride. I always used a baby flouride-free toothpaste until around 3 1/2.

We tried spitting it out last night for the 1st time & just ended up with spray all over the mirror & me. :fool: We've just used the beginner toothpaste that has no flouride, too. I recently switched dh & I's toothpaste to a natural one that's flouride-free.....they've been getting into cabinets lately & I didn't want them to accidentally eat our toothpaste. I've let them try it, but they said it was "spicy".

We have only recently (within the past 3 months or so) started using toothpaste with fluoride. They both are now pretty good at spitting out.
