Do your twins mix themselves up?

Kate calls her sister "Ninny" (which I love and think is so darn cute). But Lilly often points to Kate and says "Ninny!" She also calls her Katie, (well, "Gay-dee" to be exact) but I would say it's almost 50/50 as to which name you'll hear. Katie never ever calls Lilly "Katie" - it only seems to go the other way. Also, Kate will look at a picture of herself and say "Ninny!" Lilly doesn't seem to know who's who in pictures, either - it runs about 50/50 again.

Is this pretty common? They are 20 months old right now and this has been going on since at least the start of the summer.

I can easily tell them apart. I think right now our struggle is learning to say the names. When I ask Samantha to say her name she points at herself and says "baby". Syd hasn't learned to say either name yet. But they understand "sister".

here's a question...... When you call for Kate... does only she respond? When you call for Lilly... does only she respond? If yes to both of those then I think they understand who's who. make sense?

My are fraternal and don't look very similar. However, about the age of your kids, they started to call each other the wrong name. Both would point at their brother and say their own name and point at themselves and say their brother's name. Also, they got themselves mixed up when looking at photos. Actually, they still mix up the photos sometimes, but at almost three they are quite clear on their own names.

If your girls are mirror ID twins... in pictures they would think that they are their sister. Because they only see themselves in mirrors, they think that they actually look opposite of how they really do (which is how their sister would look in pictures). Could be a possibility for the picture thing... but I don't really know what to say about the name thing.

When they call each other by the wrong name IRL, my guess is that they are just playing around with names. But when looking at pictures, Amy & Sarah do have trouble telling themselves apart. Actually, just in the past month or two they've gotten really into looking at pictures on the computer, and they holler out "Amy!" or "Sarah!" or "Mommy!" or whoever's in the photo. So maybe being able to recognize familiar people in photographs is a skill they learn around this age?

I think you are probably right about the RL names. Funny though, about the photos. They are pretty good at identifying people in photos. The only other people they often mix up are their best buddies, Bobby and Sarah, who are also twins (10 days younger than L&K - NICU buddies). Weird.

My boys are 2 1/2 and one of them still calls his brother by his own name! They don't look anything alike...I think it may be because his brother's name is hard to say (Christian). Christian can't say his own name but calls his brother by the right name (he calls him Zachy). Zachary calls Christian "Zachy" too, they even pronounce it exactly the same way. It's hilarious. They still aren't talking really well yet, but I know they know the difference. We keep correcting him and I think he thinks it's funny :)

Ok, so I have b/g twins and Jack thinks his name is Ella!!! She started to respond the "what's your name" and I guess he saw the praise and attention she was getting, so he thinks that's his name too!

My girls both thought their name was Abbie for the longest time. I would get really confused when Abbie would ask me "Where's Abbie". I asked two different doctors about it....they both laughed and told me it was not a big deal. Now the girls are almost 3, and Abbie rarely calls her sister Abbie. Now they proudly tell me "I'm not Abbie. I'm Mary Beth". It is really cute.

My guys did mix themselves up for a while, but I always thought that it was most likely because they were often called by the wrong name. Other people mixed them up, so there was some confusion about thier names by other people. They both got called Ethan and both got called Eric. It seemed that simple to me. They do not mix themselves up in pictures very often anymore, and never when they are being spoken to or speaking. They are quick to tell you that you have got the wrong guy and sometimes even get offended now. Eric gets really touchy about wearing name tags when no one else is and getting called by his brother's name. I just get out pictures and explain to him that he looks especially like Ethan and that no one is trying to hurt his feelings.

My guys are fraternal and would confuse their names!!!

For the longest time, if you asked Ryan his name, he would respond "Colin"

He doesn't do that anymore but it was a cute phase! :D

  13. My girls did this. Mainly it was Malena. If someone asked them what their name was Malena would ALWAYS say "My name is Sofia." I would always have to remind her "No, honey your Malena." People would look at me really weird. They probably thought I kidnapped them and I changed their names. Malena did this for a LONG time. Now that they are 4yrs old they change their names on purpose just to play with people minds.

At that age my girls were not able to tell who was who in photos. Now they can tell in recent photos (from the last year) but not in their baby photos. I wouldn't think of the name thing as "not knowing who is who" but more of a not knowing the difference between a personal name and the word "sister". Just as they may go through a stage of calling all 4 legged mammals "dog", Lilly just hasn't worked out that Lilly means just her and not "sister", or "daughter", or "baby of the family" yet.

Lauren calls herself Sienna all the time. Whenever you ask her what her name is she says "Sienna", or if she wants to try something she says "Sienna's turn"....we always tell her, "you're Lauren". Sienna on the other hand calls Lauren "sister".

If you show pictures to them they both say it is Sienna no matter who it is. It is pretty funny, but I don't worry about it too much at this point.

Mine can name each other correctly but I would never expect them to correctly identify themselves in pics at this point

Regan can say Tessa and will point at her sister, but neither one of them can say Regan. I think it is just a harder name to say. They will look at pictures and point and we will tell them who it is, but they can't name each other yet.
