Do your toddlers get attached to weird things?

Okay, maybe this is not as strange as I think but we tried introducing spoons yesterday to the kiddos. It didn't go so hot. Granted they need more experience and patience from the both of us. Luke at least fed himself a spoonful of pumpkin pudding but Sophia would not let go of the spoon. She held onto it for dear life and when we took it away from her she cried and cried like we stole her best friend. I dread trying to spoon train again today because I feel so bad when the time comes to take the spoon away.
Just also wanted to add: she also has the same problem letting go of the toothbrush and we have play remotes for her hold onto. Does anyone else have this problem?

Oh Yes!! With both spoons and Toothbrushes. I either use the distraction method and find something else and sneak it away or I will let them play with them for a bit until they get tired of it (which is usually only a few minutes max). It's not worth the battle for me.

We let Jacob have the spoon whenever he wanted. His love was a black, plastic spoon. He also loved empyy Dasani water bottles. I just indulged his obsession.

My girls love their old baby spoons. They pack them around and pretend they are people and talk to the other people spoons. It's hilarious.

Totally the same thing with toothbrushes for Lily. Jack also loves to carry around food. For example, sometimes I will give them a snack to eat while they are playing in the afternoon - like an organic cereal bar or an apple or a bananna. Jack will then carry it around for over an hour but never actually eats it. They also LOVE seashells!

I always know that if I give my girls a spoon - I'm not getting it back! I try to feed them myself most of the time (just because there is less mess) but if I ever hand them a spoon - that is all she wrote!! same with the toothbrush! I usually brush their teeth and then give them the toothbrush and let them brush their own teeth - I can never do it the other way around!

Mine do the same thing with spoons and toothbrushes and any little container. Also, in the grocery store they must hold something, like yesterday with Amelia it was a bag of spinach.

Mine are the same in the grocery store.
(And then they drop it 1345356 times and I have to pick it up. But it keeps them from being fussy!)

Yep. "poons" are one of our favorite toys. I just had to hide the whole spoon holder in the bedroom an hour ago cuz I couldn't take the crying for the OTHER 'pooooooooonnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Good Lord.

Totally normal. Ours is (currently) 'poons, books, toothbrushes, remote controls, phones and BANANAS or 'lanananas'.

It's driving me nuts tho. NUTS!

Maia hugs inanimate objects and says 'ahhh'! Tonight she was doing it with her peas! She does it a lot with her sippy and freaks out when I take it back from her.

Chloe gets the death grip on her sippy (that she will NOT drink from) and any phone or remote control.
They really like these rubbery spoons that I never use to feed them, only to distract them! I also give them their infant tylenol/motrin from those rubbery spoons because they love them so much - works great :good:

I cannot believe that I forgot to mention our current most annoying obsession - bubbles!
They do not want you to blow them for them, THEY want to hold the bubble container and run around all day with them. Of course the minute you give them to them they open them and dump the bubble juice all over the ground. I have started to give them empty ones to carry around and I swear they would sleep with them if we allowed it!

They basically run around all day asking for "BUBBLES!"

oh Nancy, don't ge tme started. My dd's strange attachments just keep on going. She is 3 now and continues to hoard things and carry around just the strangest things. her most recent is the furniture from the doll house which she has put into a little purse. Sometimes it's so me legos, sometimes a stuffed animal, whatever the flavor of the week is.

Yes!! Spoons of all shapes and size, shoes, the toilet bowl brush  , any sort of little container... The list goes on, whatever might be their object of desire for the day.

Oh, I feel so much better reading all of your replies. I really did think it was my kids because my friends all joke: gee, all we need to get Sophia & Luke are spoons, water bottles, remotes and not toys. I'm like, didn't your kids do these things? Thanks ladies!

For my kids, its rocks. They'll carry them, fight over them, and must have them in the car... good thing theres always rocks outside and they're a free toy!

Oh my yes, spoons, bowls, water bottles (we don't drink from them but when we go to the park DD likes to try to steal everyone elses) any type of container especially if it has the yellow puffs label. Remotes and phones are big but not as much since we gave them old/play ones.
