    ... dips, spreads, and sauces?

I would love to introduce sauces, since at the moment they eat almost no veggies (except purees) or meat, and I think that might help. But mine seem deeply suspicious of any such thing.

If I give them plain toast they eat it -- if I put cream cheese or apple butter or anything on it, they won't. And I tried once to show them how to dip something in cheese sauce, and they just ignored me (and the food).

Did you have to "teach" your kids to eat food with stuff on it?

My girls eat ketchup and have eaten chip dip before. I just started putting it on their highchair tray and they started playing (drawing) with it and then putting their fingers in their mouths. once they started getting the taste, I just started giving it to them occasionally.

they had french fries and ketchup last night, they seem to really love it. I'm hoping that by having them like ketchup, they would be more open to eating different things. I didn't try ketchup when my son was littler and he is a VERY picky eater and won't try anything. I just want the girls to try different things. Most kids who love ketchup, will try just about anything if it has ketchup on it. That's just been my experience.

I say, if you just because they turn their nose up once doesn't mean they will never pick up the taste for it. just keep introducing.

Mine love ketchup and ranch dressing. They also love onion dip at get-togethers. I guess it is something they just acquired over me introducing them to it many times?

When we would go to the mexican restaurant, they would always have to dip their crackers or whatever they had in the salsa or cheese dip, and we always let them. As they got older, we began letting them have the chips and dipping them in it with those.

I guess since they saw us doing it, they wanted to.

Mine love cheese sauce, ketchup, and cream cheese. To get them to eat cream cheese I put some on a baby spoon(we also did this with pb). You might put some jam on their tray and see if they will eat it without it being on the bread, then you might put it on the bread. Mine love yogurt which they get with breakfast and here lately they have been dipping their cereal in the yogurt. Mine also like chocolate pudding and jello(all of which they eat with a spoon).

Our ST got the girls to eat certain foods by teaching them to dip. She would give them ritz sticks or graham crackers and have them dip it in pudding, yogurt, applesauce or PB. They caught on to catsup and ranch real fast after they got the hang of it. They cant have a french fry without asking for "dippy."

How's the saying go?? Be careful what you wish for?? In our case, at least, this is true. When the girls finally discovered dips and spreads it was all over for us. Now EVERYTHING has to have a dip, spread, sauce or something or it's not an edible item. I've had a hard time with this, because most dips, spreads, etc are full of fat and sugar. So I make my own veggie spread or apple spread and limit the ketchup which is their favorite.

I'm sure it will happen! They'll be little dippers in no time!!

Mine like to dip certain foods too but usually use their fingers to "test" the dip first. Then if they like it will dip crackers or chips. [IMG]

I think I introduced the dip concept around 15 months and they took right to it. I gave them a puddle of ranch dressing with their carrots and showed them how to dip while saying "dip, dip, dip". For the first couple of weeks, they thought they had to dip EXACTLY three times [IMG] Now they get much more excited about mealtime if a dip is involved (the mere mention of it starts excited chatter) so I often give them something.

I'd just keep offering on occasion and they'll probably decide they like it. Most toddlers do.

MY dd would rather eat dips and sauces than the food they are supposed to go with.. we call her the condiment queen!

Jade dips, Melissa doesn't. Jade's favorites are ketchup and Marie's (not mine, the commercial brand) Poppy Seed Dressing.

Actually I should take that back because Melissa will dip crackers and pretzels in hummus, but she doesn't like "sauce" with her meals like Jade does.

Mine are also very suspicious of anything with dip on it, and won't eat it. Of course the other day we went out to eat and ordered chicken tenders for the girls, and Natalie wanted to eat the honey mustard sauce by the spoonful. But on the chicken? No way! Rita made my mom pretend to dip the chicken for her, but she wouldn't eat it if my mom actually got any sauce on it. [IMG] They refuse fries with ketchup on them, etc. It's fine with me because they do eat pretty well anyway, and we don't tend to dip a lot unless it's chips and dip (which we pretty much ever eat in front of them anyway), so it's preferable to me to have them NOT get into dipping. I don't actually eat ketchup on my fries, either. [IMG]

mine are so picky. but they'll eat the heck out of a bowl of guacamole. at 21 months, if I want them to eat their veggies I still have to spoon feed them purees. karen

My girls love anything they can dip. They started with ketchup, but now, they will dip anything. Yesterday, Elizabeth wanted to dip her banana in ketchup. I told her that it would not taste good. She thought about it for a long time before deciding not to try it.
