Do you think this is appropriate for a 6 y/o party?

We have two girls who'll be 6 this fall. This is what I've thought of for their party - I want to make sure that I'm willing to do it, though, before I bring it up to them.

One is ultra girly-girly and really into the princess thing. The other is a self-described tomboy, doesn't like dresses or frills or anything like that. They are in the same class this year, maybe for the last time, so I thought I'd do one more invite-the-whole-class-and-half-the-other-people-they-know parties. I also like to have a dress-up theme because their birthday is so close to Halloween. I feel like we're competing with the church carnivals and trick-or-treating, and I want their party to be as much fun as anything else going on that weekend. Ella is especially concerned that whatever we do not be too girly (her words) so the boys will like it, too.

We did a castle theme 2 years ago, the girls came as princesses, the boys (and Ella!) as knights or dragons, etc. Last year, it was pirate and princess. Ella makes a really cute pirate, andRosalie still asks me about once a week to fix her hair fancy like I did for her party.

After seeing my girls dressed for school Friday, I thought of the tailgating idea. Rosalie was in her miniature cheerleader uniform and Ella was wearing capri jeans and a team t-shirt. I thought boys might enjoy wearing their football shirts or even uniform and lots of 5 & 6 year old girls like to dress as cheerleaders. But it's not so over the top costumy that someone who didn't dress up would feel left out.

I'm thinking of backing a couple of trucks up on the edge of the driveway to serve food from, and maybe have hay bales to sit on. What do y'all think?

I think that is a really great idea! I bet all the kids would love that! You don't have to do bales of hay either. Just rectangular tables with lawn chairs, just like being at the game (or even have each guest bring a blanket to sit on to eat). You could do like hot dogs, hamburgers, cotton candy, popcorn, lemonade (or beer for adults if you so desire), nachos, funnel cake.......OK I am getting carrie away. It just sounds so fun!!

You could also have pom poms for the girls - kind of an automatic costume maker for those who didn't dress up and something else sportish for the others.

Great idea! Can I come? :D

I think Oreintal Trading does little footballs that you can have their names put on

Wonderful idea!! Don't forget to put out the beanbag toss and ladder ball -- when we go to Miller Park, the tailgaters always bring those!

Love the idea. My middle dd is having her 9th party soon. She's also an OCT baby. I'm doing a Halloween theme for her.

Oriental Trading Company has some cute stuff for football and cheering. You might also try Shindigz.com. I haven't been on thier site lately, but they usually have some really cute stuff for High Schools to use. Think, plastic megaphones and rally cups. OOH! You could do the little rally cups with thier names on them and the date as a "goody bag."

What's ladder ball (I ask from over here on the girly-girl side :D ).

And I love the cups for goody bag idea. Are rally cups just plastic tumblers?
Here's the snag in my party idea: I've never actually been tailgating and DH and together only watch about 27 minutes per year of televised football.

Ladder ball, as you can see in the link, has two plastic ladder-type goals. Each team throws their bolos, I think they're called (rope with golf-ball-type things on each end) at the ladders and try to get the bolos to hang or wrap around the ladder rungs without falling off. You get different points depending on the rung.

All you need for tailgating is a couple games like this, a grill, burgers/dogs/sausage, peanuts, etc.

I LOVE this idea! I might steal it for my oldest's bday in early Nov. It's the perfect theme for a fall party!
