do you STILL wash their clothes

With my first kid, I washed all his clothes in fancy baby detergent and before he wore them until he was at least 6 months old I think. With these babies I washed all their newborn stuff before they were born--but in good ol' tide. Now that they're 5 months, I sometimes wash new stuff, sometimes not. Do you all still wash everything before they wear it? How long did you keep this up? Just wondering if I'm the only lazy mom who has given up this practice!

I washed all the 0-3 stuff in perfume and die free soap before they were born. Now that they are starting to wear some 3-6 and I know they do not have sensitive skin I do not wash new stuff unless it feels stiff or uncomfortable. :)

I have to wash DH's new stuff before he can wear it. Sensitive skin. So for me it depends on the person in question.

I still wash all our family's new clothes before we wear them, perfume and dye free detergent. If I'm not mistake, new clothes often have chemicals on them like formaldehyde, which you can absorb through the skin.

I actually still do wash things before they wear them. I usually do the same for my own clothes, because I don't like the way they smell and feel when they're straight from the store.

Actually we buy most of their clothes used -- so then I wash them because I'm never sure how well the consignment store washed them (though I'm sure they do).

We use Kirkland Free (or whatever it's called -- Costco brand) for all our laundry. It's cheap and perfume-free.

I just automatically wash all of our clothes before wearing...with no fancy detergents, but I definitely wash everything.

I still wash the girls stuff - but mainly because they are small and I need the clothes to shrink!

I washed all of their newborn stuff, but I don't generally wash new stuff before wear now. I have enough laundry! We have never had any problems.

Never have washed their new stuff (or mine for that matter). I can't get the laundry done as it is!

I wash everything before wearing, baby or adult. Textiles come loaded with all kinds of chemicals. The smell alone drives me nuts. And you never know what's been dropped on the floor, sneezed on, etc, at the store.

My mom has always made me wash my new clothes when I get them. Stuff that is packaged is not that bad, but sometimes I still wash those. But stuff on shelves in stores I always wash. You just never know who has touched them or tried them on, and what was on their hands.

Better to be safe than sorry. :unknw:

I used to work in retail and the stories I could tell. :bad: I ALWAYS wash everything because people are GROSS!! Just because it's new from the store doesn't mean it's clean, quite the opposite in fact!

I used to - but lately I have been having to buy new warmer clothes and just don't have the time to wash everthing first. From the last post though - I may rethink that.... But I don't think people are trying on baby clothes are they? I just ran aout of my last bottle of Dreft - and will not get anymore. They have dye / fragrance free detergent for alot cheaper - but my girls are almost 8 mos now - so I may try a regular detergent. I absolutley love the smell of Tide Spring - I miss it - so I may try it and see if the girls have any reaction. I did wash ALL of their newborn stuff. what a chore that was!!

I washed all their newborn stuff, but probably once they hit 3 months was when I started being hit or miss about it, just like I am for the rest of the family.

There are some outfits of theirs that I deliberately don't wash first 'cause I know they'll wrinkle and I don't want to iron baby clothes!

    <---bad mom, bad mom

Edited to add more bad mom stuff: I've never used Dreft. Always the family detergent. Mostly Purex Free & Clear.

People may not be trying on the baby clothes, but they aren't washing their hands before they touch them either. Shopping cart handles are nasty, just think about it. Most people don't wash their hands after using the bathroom, or cough into their hands, etc etc. That all ends up on the cart handle. People cough and sneeze all over the clothes all the time. I've seen people grab new clothes off the rack, use them as spit-up/snot/drool/sweat rags, (sometimes) wipe them off with another piece of clothing then put them back on the rack. I saw a kid puke so much and so hard that it splattered up onto clothes. I'm sure not every article of clothing his puke splattered on was removed. Really, people are gross. Those are the nicer stories I have to share.

I always wash new clothes except one time the girls had got a t shirt off a friend which she'd bought on vacation, anyhow they'd just got the night before and begged me to wear it, I let them (against my better judgement) and they both ended up with a big rash on their stomach's....... coincidence??? I think not.

I ALWAYS wash new clothes. Babies mine or DH's, it doesn't matter, it all gets washed first. I knew about the chemicals and that was enough for me. I didn't think of all the gross stuff Jenny posted about. Yuck!!!

I also use Dreft (actually the Target brand) and I was going to until they are 1yr old.

I wash things that we buy new before wearing. There are extra dyes and chemicals on the clothes, sure don't want that next to my skin. Not to mention if someone tried it on before you and they have BO or gross deodorant

I was everything before it is worn in Baby All. I have been doing so since my oldest DD was born almost 3 years ago. I will continue to do so especially after Jenny's post. I know how much I finger through baby clothes and I know I am not the only one.

You are very welcome! I just decreased the mystery illnesses. ;)

Really, you must believe me when I say people are gross. You would not believe the things I've encountered.

    EWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!

I'm way too OCD about this. I have prewashed absolutely everything, down to tights, socks, bibs, etc. I just finished my last tub of Dreft but only because Lauren had skin issues early on so I was nervous to try regular detergent.

I always washed the next size up well in advance so I didn't have to think about it again for a while. I just got done washing their 18 month stuff.

I actually prewash clothes for all of us.
