Do you see a peri?

My ob hasn't mentioned referring my to a peri. I'm only 12 weeks, so I don't know if he just hasn't mentioned it "yet". But anyway, I read on a lot of posts about you guys seeing a peri, so I wanted to take a poll...

Do most people see one? If you see one is it b/c you've had complications, or just preventative?

I started to see a peri at 24 weeks. Initially, the plan was that the peri would do the level II u/s's one a month or so, and then I would just see my OB for regular checkups. The reason she wanted a peri for the u/s's was because of insurance issues (the facilities/techs that she worked with were not covered by my insurance). BUT, at around that same time, I started having pre-term labor issues. So she recommended that I start receiving all of my care from the peri. So after that, I just saw my peri exclusively.

Had my pregnancy been routine (even with twins) I would have just seen the OB.

I had my first peri apt at 12 weeks, 2 weeks after we'd had a miscarriage scare; the babies were ok they think it was a blood clot, possible placenta previa. I still see my OB every month, but now I am seeing my peri once a month too. The apts are staggered so I'm seeing one or the other about every 2 weeks.

Well, you already know my answer. [IMG] Yes, I see both my OB and a peri. Haven't had any big complications yet...just a lot of braxton hicks contractions. So my cervix is being measured by ultrasound at the peri's every two weeks (plus other stuff, of course).

I had one consultation/ultrasound with the peri, but she saw no need for me to come back. I'd been having some PTL issues, so my docs thought a consultation was warranted. Since then, I've been alternating between my RE and my OB. Now that I'm in the home stretch, i just see the OB.

I started seeing a Peri at 23 weeks to be monitored for TTTS due to a shared placenta, and for my heart condition. I think if they hadn't been monocorionic (sp?) my OB would've handled everything himself like with my singletons, but with more U/S.

i see the peri to do the level II ultrasounds which right now are every 4 weeks. I did not start seeing them until 19 weeks though.

yep - peri and OB both! I was 10 weeks when I first saw the peri
and I didn't ever have any big problems - the OB sent me
to the peri just to be cautious!!

I am seeing both a peri and ob at this point. The peri appts are basically ultrasound for growth checks, tvs to check cervix length, and now I will start non-stress tests and the u/s with doppler to check for the blood flow in the umbilical cords. I am also having mo/di twins sharing a placenta - so that may be why I am seeing the peri. My ob just checks my weight, urine, fundal height, any swelling, checks my cervix and checks the babies' heart rate. She also gets the peri reports.

I've only seen my ob, and as long as I continue with no complications, she is the only one I'll see. I think Peri's are in higher risk cases, but I'm not sure what the exact situation has to be for the switch to be made.

I saw a peri twice and then he released me back to my regular OB because everything seemed to be going "ok" at that point - now that I see my OB each week - I don't think anything can get by him! [IMG]

No peri here... I see the ob, and for blood clotting issues I go to a hematologist. I only see him every 3-4 weeks.

I initially saw a peri for some odd test results we had - and because my OB's (whom I love) don't have privileges at the hospital with a Level 3 nursery that I want to deliver at IF I go early. The hospital they deliver at only allows twins at 34 weeks plus - so if there were complications I wanted to already have a relationship with someone.

I am seeing her again as my OB's want a consult on delivery timing (there are apparently different opinions/protocols on how far to let a twin pregnancy go - from reading here lots of women go til or even past 38 weeks, others' docs want to deliver no later than 38, etc..

Also, my twins are mono/di, and although my OBs have delivered many of them, I think they just want the additional consult w/someone experiences w/really high risk stuff, and so do I. HTH

After we found out is was twins, my ob said I would see a peri at some point- all depends on how I was doing as to when. He said we would go at 24 weeks if something came back abnormal from our 20 week u/s, if not it would be 28 weeks. After our 20 week u/s, everything was going great, so he said more like 30-32 weeks. We go on Wed. to see the peri and have a level II u/s at 29 weeks.

If your babies possibly share a placenta, then you should probably be referred to a peri for u/s every two weeks. If they don't share a placenta, then you are most likely okay staying with your OB unless you have complications. Identical twins sharing a placenta can have special complications while many doctors don't see fraternal twins as very high risk.

In reply to previous post; when i asked my OB about the necessity of doing more frequent u/s (I get them every four weeks), and my concerns about TTTS because mine are mono/di and do share a placenta, she said to me that TTTS doesn't have such sudden onset and that they are comfortable w/4 week u/s schedule. I am just repeating what I heard; I trust my docs pretty much but as i am having a peri apptment next wek i will definitely ask her what she thinks.

It also makes sense to check w/your insurance - sometimes they only cover a certain number, although of course it's important to do what's best for the babies.

After finding out that I was having twins at 8 weeks, my OB had me set up a peri appointment at 20 weeks, but the peri wants to see me at 15 weeks. I think every OB operates differently.

I am actually going to see one for the first time on the 31. I'm 16 weeks now. I have to go because of some complications with an early lose of an identical triplet. I will continue to see both the OB and the Peri every 2 weeks.

Never seen one, because I haven't had any problems. If I was having identicals, I would definitely see one though! My OB takes good care of me though...I've been almost every week of this pregnancy since about 18 weeks. And, she starts weekly NST's at 22ish weeks...so I feel very confident in her.
