im just curious how many of us have twins in the family. i know lisa is an identical twin, her sister has identical twin boys, and she has identical twin girls. i thought identicals were random? mine are fraternal, but there are no twins in my family. i know of people that have had multiple sets of identicals and fraternals. how does that work?

Can I give you my smart alec answer? :D

Yes, they run in the house, through the house, around the house and on the sidewalk!! OH, THEY RUN ALRIGHT!!!

(My Dh has twins on his side - but that has nothing to do with mine!)

Yes twins run in my family. I have twin great aunts (frat), twin uncles (frat), twin first cousins (id), one of my first cousins (the older brother of the id twins) has twin DDs (frat), and then my girls. But my girls are the result of IVF, so while we blend in well they really aren't because of our genetics.

I confidently say yes because my DH is an identical twin. However, my twins are a result of IVF too...

My family is very "textbook". I had twins, my mom miscarried twins, my mom's mother lost twins at 7 months, my mom's maternal cousin has 3 sets of twins. There are more farther back in my grandmothers history, but I'm not sure of the specifics. At one time my mom said there were 32 sets of twins in her family (though who knows how far she is going back).

I thought the same thing, identicals (which I have) are not hereditary, fraternals are hereditary, but have to come from the mother's side. I have no twins anywhere in my family, but DH has 3 sets of identicals on his side. :unknw:

My childrens father had two distant uncles that each had a set of twins..but nothing more immediate than that.. but AFTER we had our twins, his brother had a set of IDs! There are no twins in my family.

I question the whole "anomaly" aspect of identical twinning...I am obviously not a scientist, but I just have my doubts. My mom has identical twin boys, and I have identical twin girls.

Twins definitely run in my family. My husband has 2 sets that I know of in his family but that doesn't matter I guess. My boys are identical, they made the 8th set in my family, but there is only like 2 sets of identical in the family including mine, the rest are frats.

Nope. Not a single set of twins on my side or dh's... until now.

Same here...the whole identical/fraternal thing is confusing as to heredity...but anyhoo.

    My dad was a twin.
His mom (my grandmother) was a twin.
And her father was a twin.

    None in my family...

I often wonder if many twins, more older than younger...and I don't mean OOOOLLLDD...I just mean 25+ as opposed to infants are not actually ID's...ya know, there is much more to ID vs. Frat then once thought...I could be completely wrong and am not saying thats true in every case, but I'm willing to bet there are quite of few sets of adult twins that think they are ID's and are actually frats. What do you think??

My grandmother on my mother's side had fraternal twin boys. According to my doc, my mother passed that trait down to me which resulted in our dear fraternal twin girls.

Since it runs in our family, DH and I knew there could always be a chance. Little did we know it would be the first shot and the result of our honeymoon!!!

Our girls are the first twins we know of on either side of our family.

As for the anomoly of IDs...I read somewhere that it can be the result of a chemical in the sperm that splits the egg. Anyone know about this? DH is soooo proud that it could be his super-sperm! :bow2: :rotflmbo:

yes, 3 sets besides mine on my side....two of them i didn't find out about until after we were pregnant due to one of the twins not making it in each set. Who would of thought we would of had the same fate at 37 weeks...heartbreaking.

It's weird, but on my mom's side it is every third generation. My grandpa's mother had three sets, but only one set survived birth, which is very sad but she also gave birth on a farmhouse table in the 1920's...I can't imagine.

So my sister or I were destined to be the next generation. We both had IVF to get pregnant, but I was 37 at the time so I had three factors: runs in the family, IVF, and age. Guess I was the lucky one and I know she could not handle twins. She freaks out whenever she comes over and they are crying together.

I bet it is the other way around. I bet there are sets of IDs that think they are frat because the dr. said since they were di/di they must be frat.

I agree with you. There are three generations of ID twins in my family!

I have the first set of twins in my family other than some distant cousins on my dad's side. However, I spent about $12K to get them here. Wouldn't trade them for the world!

My moms mom (grandma) was a fraternal twin g/g… she also claimed to be physic, and told my sister and I one of us was going to have twins… we all thought it was going to be my sister, as I wasn’t going to have any kids, then after I had my son I REALY wasn’t gonna have any more… then when my sister did start to think kids, she did every fertility treatment under the sun (we even joked that grandma was right she would probably get prego w/ twins)… well nothing worked after 10 years and a second on the house… then found out in the middle of adoption proceedings, she found out she was prego on her own, then after her second was born she got her tubes tied… So we thought grandma was wrong….

    I have ID boys

No twins in either of our families... our IDs were 100% random.

Yes somewhere way back in my family there are one or two sets, but mine are the result of fertility treatments and ovulating 3 eggs! :D So glad it's only twins!

This is so neat because we have been recently finding more of our extended family. My mother didn't know that her father had brothers, let alone one was still alive. Her father had Parkinsons and went into the hospital when she was very young so she didn't really get to learn all of this, and my grandmother never talked about it. My mom found out about the brother by accident on the internet. It turns out that he had twins and one of the twins had twins. I am not sure at this point about any further back, I am just starting to work on our genealogy.

My father is Jewish and the relatives on his fathers side never made it over here. I just found out that his mother was a twin and that her mother was a twin. In looking back, I am still not really sure about relations and such, but there were tons of twins. I am still not sure which ones are actually related, it is really hard to find records due to the holocaust. I am still digging on both sides so it will be interesting to see how many more sets of twins surface.

My husband has a few on his side, but that doesn't matter I guess. It is all really interesting stuff.

Nope, I had fraternals. My FIL keeps saying he had twins in his family but obivously these have nothing to do with him / them.

I have frat uncles on my maternal side. My dh has 5 sets of ID twins on his side. He has 4 sets on his mom's maternal and paternal side and 1 set on his father's maternal side. I don't think ID twinning is all that random anymore ;)

My grandmother's Great grandmother had 2 sets of twins (6 generations back). Other than that, nope, none anywhere, no cousins, no odd-ball thrice removed uncle's barber. . .

Apparently there haven't been any other over-achievers in the reproduction department aside from me.
