Do toddlers pee more at night?

We've never had a problem with nighttime leakage before (except on very rare occasions), but these days Sarah seems to wake up with a bulging diaper nearly every day. It's not just leaking at the edges, it's completely saturated.

Our habit has been to not change them till after breakfast, but we're having to change that because if she sits on that diaper, the liquid seeps through her PJs. Blech.

What's the best overnight diaper in a size 4-5? Or should we just go up a size (which I was on the verge of doing anyway) and see if that helps first? Do toddlers pee more at night than infants do?

We just went up a size for nighttime. And yes, we had to change them first thing in the morning. In Ben's case, he peed more at night because he could hold it for longer, and when he finally went, he went A LOT! But once he was potty trained, he could hold it all night, which has been nice.

My guys pee like crazy at night but this is not a new thing for them. They often get their jammies wet even with a night time diaper. Going up a size probably won't work since the tabs touch in the center as it is. So, we just change diapers and get dressed first thing in the morning. They often need a quick bath too because it turns out that poop isn't well contained by a soggy diaper, either.

Huggies overnights give the best odds of dry jammies.

I posted a few months ago that my son was leaking through his Huggies oevernights. It was suggested to get Diaper Doublers (it is like a mini pad) and he has not leaked since. It is the best invention ever!

I'm sorry, Debi...I just have to laugh  What do you feed your boys straight Metamucil? I swear it seems they are always pooping!

I second the Huggies Overnights. I always go up a size when we get leaky at night. I also refuse to use a generic diaper at night. We don't use Huggies Overnights exclusively, but I've noticed that since implementing a nightly yogurt smoothie about 30-minutes before bed (our current me-do phase is negatively correlated with their calories consumed  ) we are on the verge of leaking most mornings.

Edited on Alden's behalf to capitalize a proper noun (Metamucil). :p

I've been using Huggies Overnights since they were about 10 months old, and probably should have started them sooner. They were always waking up soaked in regular diapers. Every once in a while, they soak through the Overnights. Their diapers are always huge, so we change them as soon as we go get them, and get them dressed right away.

:rotflmbo: No, no Metamucil. Wait, maybe I should check the container before I say that  I think it's just that they eat their fruits & veggies and I use a lot of whole grains in my cooking. Maybe I should post a pooping frequency poll and then I'd know if they're "special" but 2-4 times a day is their norm (which is not to say they haven't had extra poopy days...) Or like today, they only went once so tomorrow morning will be a bath morning, guaranteed! :p

Sorry to taint your post with poop talk, Alden, but I couldn't resist.

No worries -- that is useful info too! (FWIW, mine poop generally twice a day -- once between breakfast and daycare, and once at some point during the day.)

Anyway, we'll start with the Overnights and see if that helps. Changing them before breakfast is obviously an option too, but I'm reluctant to do it, because they are such messy eaters. If we change them after breakfast, at least we can send them to daycare in clean clothes (not that they come home that way).

Sweetpea, thanks for capitalizing Metamucil for me -- I'm touched. :p

I still use Bumkins Jr bibs to save the clothes. My kids still make a mess, but it's getting better. Ainsley is a morning pooper, 75% of the time, she has a poop when I go get her.

You've got us beat there...we're always at least once, often twice. I could tell you within an 8-minute window when my kids are going to poop. They really ARE identical.

You're right on the fruits and veggies. My boys love fresh fruit and most veggies...but I can't remember the last time I met one of the boys in the morning already pooped!

Just to completely divert from the OP (I'm allowed to do that, right, since I'm the OP?)... Amy often poops before getting up in the morning too. Sarah never does.

And we do use bibs -- but when they eat oatmeal, they are covered in it. It drops in their laps and onto the footrests of their chairs and then they squish it all over the place and UGH. Maybe we'll just feed them breakfast naked. (We have actually done that -- though it's a bit chilly this time of year.)

We had some initial luck with the Huggies Overnights with Chloe, but she leaked through them the night before last. I can't find a size that fits Bryce in the Overnights. They are both in pull ups during the day as regular diapers irritate Chloe during the day and cause her to break out in rashes more frequently. The pull ups during the day have eliminated that problem.

Sounds like we just have to deal with leaky diapers in the morning, but I am going to check out those Diaper Doublers!

We use Target Brand for during the day and then Pamper Cruiser at night and it work for us without any leakage for now. I will probably buy the diaper doubler if they start leaking the diapers we are using for bedtime.

the huggies overnights never worked for us. I have no idea why. I switched to the Babies R Us Brand (Especially for You) Supremes, and we are doing a LOT better. I just bought the diaper doublers too and will be trying those soon. We are already at a size 6 at night time, so the doublers better work! My guys definitely go more at night, and Jonah usually has a "present" for us in the morning.
