Do some women get to work until the birth of their twins?

Is it possible to work until the twins come? I know a lot of people have pregnancy difficulties or end up on bed rest, but do some people manage to work the whole pregnancy? I'm an elementary music teacher which is a very active, on-my-feet job, but if I'm organized, I think I can work it so I can sit for at least a portion, if not most, of every class as the pregnancy progresses.

i think its possible if your body and babies behave..Im not sure you would want to though..lol

It also depends on what you do for work..if your able to sit more often then that might help..my dr is nervous about meworking 3 days a week for like 6 hrs total..and im not having any problems and I sit..so who knows..

Some do (a minority), but there is just no way to tell what it's going to be like for you. I would say that you should think about how you might do it, but don't count on it. I have a desk job and even I had to go part-time at 25 weeks and quit at 29 weeks -- not because of any serious medical problems but just because I couldn't stand to sit upright for 8 hours a day.

I posted something recently in FY asking (on behalf of my SIL, who is 22w with b/b twins) if anyone made it right to the end with no bedrest or serious problems -- a few people said they did.

I am 30 weeks and still working full time and hope to keep working until l/d. I work nine hours a day (I sit at a desk) and have a half hour commute on the train twice a day. In this wretched August heat the commute is what kills me but dh is super sweet and always picks me up at the 'tro so I don't have to take the bus home. Anyways...working until delivery can be done!

If your doctor has no concerns and you take it easy when you're body and babies tells you to, you never know it could happen. I know that I will not be working up until delivery probably not past 30 wks, but my situation is very different.

I did - I had a ptl scare at 24 w but my docs were great and put me on a terb pump in lieu of sticking me on bedrest. It worked! i ended up delivering at 34w NOT b/c of early labor, but b/c of rapidly escalating pre-e. I had worked a full day the day I went into the hospital!

I worked full-time up until the morning of my scheduled c-section at 38 weeks, 1 day. I had no complications during pregnancy of any kind and my doctor was supportive of me continuing to work. If you feel good and your doctor is ok with it, it can be done!

yes, i know of several women who have worked until either their company leave started or until they were due. i think it depends on how your body is handlling the pregnancy and the kind of work you do and your commute. my doc didn't want me commuting after 20 weeks. but i suspect i can keep working from home until the time comes. i'm not sure i'll want to though.....

I worked full time up until I had my girls. I was induced on a Monday morning and I was at work the Friday before. I think what helped me alot was drinking tons of water and doing nothing but lay on the couch all the time except when I was at work. I was very lucky to work the whole time as bedrest was one of my biggest fears.

I am a doctor in a clinic for children with developmental disabilities, so I spend about half time on my feet and the other sitting. I am still working full time and plan to unless complications arise. My peri had no set time for me to leave work before delivery as long as I was feeling ok and no complications. So far, so good.... But I am really exhausted by the end of the day and I'm thinking I may want to go to half-days in a few weeks....

You can do it! I taught 5th grade last year and worked until I had the boys at 37 weeks. Take care of yourself, rest in the evenings/weekends and make friends wtih the custodians so they will get you a good chair and stool to put your feet on!!!

I teach third grade and planned to work as long as possible. My original OB wanted me to stop working at 28 weeks, which was the week teachers started back to work at the end of August. I saw another member of the practice when I was sick and he was more positive about twin pregnancies. Both DH and I really liked him and we ended up switching to him. He wanted me to make modifications to make work easier for me-ie I have always stood at my overhead cart when using it so we had DH move in a table and put the overhead on that so I could sit when I was using it. I positioned some of my charts in different locations so I could sit and still teach with them. It was hard because I rarely sit when I have students in the room, so I had to change a lot of things to get me off my feet more. I imagine you could do a lot to modify your room/teaching to make things more pregnancy friendly. Forgot to say, DH did all my lifting/moving of things in my room to help get it set up and ready to go. After a couple weeks, I started to take Wednesdays off. This gave me a time to rest/recharge and gave my substitute time to get to know my kids before she came in for my maternity leave. I think it helped keep me going. A co-worker also volunteered to take my students to lunch and pick them up from recess the second week of school.

With all that said, I did too much one day at work and ended up taking the next day off because I didn't feel "right". I had a regular appt scheduled, so went to that and was sent straight to labor and delivery with PTL at exactly 33 weeks. I had been nesting at home all weekend and ended up "nesting" in my classroom for about three hours after work that Monday. I felt fine and was a little obsessed with organizing at that point so kinda got started and couldn't stop, but it was obviously too much for me. Luckily, the OB was able to hold things off and I delivered the girls at 38 weeks 1 day after being on bedrest until 36 weeks.

My doctor didnt see a problem in me working up untill the end of my pregnancy. Up untill 4 days before i had my babies i worked 32 hours a week with children with special needs and then another 10 hours in an after school club and felt bsolutley fine. I went home on the thursday pm because i was just so tired and had planned to go back on the monday but my babies had a different idea and came on the monday at 32.4 weeks. I would say just listen to your body and if things get to much dont try to push it. Take things day by day x

I"m still working at 31 weeks, although I have switched from full time to part time at 20 weeks due to bp issues. My ob says I can keep working as long as I feel okay and things look okay with me and the babies. My tenative plan is to stop working at the end of August, which puts me at 34ish weeks, but if I feel okay, I may just keep working until the babies are born, I'd rather have the time off. I"m just playing it by ear though b/c who knows how I'll feel then.

    Ladies,

I'm feeling so much better. I know I can't control everything, but now I am feeling like I can make accomodations and hopefully I can make this work. I just talked to my principal about canceling my concerts after the first week of Dec. I'm going to do two smaller performances earlier this fall instead. Then I can just concentrate on my regular classroom work and I can try to stay off my feet as much as possible.

It is possible...I would suggest making your active job as unactive as you can. This will keep your pg healthy and the babies too. I've noticed people who work and are active a lot end up on bed rest many times so be careful. Perhaps bringing your principal in on it for modifications. Even if you feel fine, always remember to be cautious on activity. Working can be wonderful compared to being at home with less to do...if you have no children to take care of there. I say, go for it!

I had the most wonderful twin pregnancy and i did work right up until my scheduled delivery date at 37w3d. I will add, however, that I did have a job where I could sit at my desk most of the day if I needed to. (But sometimes it actually feels better to get up and move!)

Of course it all depends on how well your body and the babies cooperate. I was very blessed. Hopefully if you get really organized and allow yourself time to sit down, things will work out for you.

    Good Luck,
    Jen
