Do/Did your twins speak ONLY the first syllable of a word???

Both my guys have developed a habit (???) of saying only the first syllable of words. The result of which is that I seem to be the only one who understands them; but my husband is coming along as I translate for him. [IMG]

I know they are both capable of saying more than one syllable, as they can say "water", "Mommy" Daddy" and "kitty" with no problem. But for the most part all their other words that are more than one syllable are just the first part. (for example, blanky is "bla" flower is "fla" etc...)

Anyone else experience anything like this?? Is so, did it just stop one day or did you have to seek services??

I have the same here...no solutions yet.
Anyway I am happy at least we can understand more or less what they mean, and they seem to think that is very clear what they want.
I had the feeling that was because they are kind of growing in three languages spanish(me) czech(dh) and we live in Germany, but is nice to know we are not the only one.
They also can say some complete words, but syllables are the main way of expression.
I think they are still too young to worry about it , if they seem to understand everything.

I cannot wait to have a "conversation" with them....

    Hope words come soon,

    CARO

Developmentally, that is a very natural language progression. It will correct itself over time.

My kids do it quite often too, but just for one syllable words (ka for cat, da for dog). BUT, for two syllable words, they tack the middle sound onto the beginning (apple is papple, hippo is pippo, elbow is belbow, Hannah is Nannah). I too seem to be the only one that can understand what they are saying!!! [IMG]

Normal here to, music is "mu" The girls get speech therapy and that is one thing we are working on. Our ST is working on that now, but said to not be concerned about it because its just natural progression.

Both Nicky and Anthony were/are doing this. I had them evaluated and they qualified for speech therapy. They have been receiving therapy for about 4 months now and are doing much better. The speech therapist did say this is a developmental delay. She advised to really stress the last syllable of the word they are trying to say and to repeat it back to them slowly and clearly. The boys are doing so much better now. They are putting words together too. I wouldn't be too worried either. Try stressing the last syllables and see how that goes.

My son does/did the exact same thing. He didn't start to say more than 10 words at all until he was almost 2 1/2. In Sept. he began speech therapy for his expressive language. It is now the beginning of february and he is speaking in up to 5 word sentences, singing full songs, and, best of all, putting the ending syllable on words! I don't think it was all the therapist, but more the fact that he was getting older, and it was the natural progression of his language.

Adam says Melmo!! It cracks me up because he usually drops the consonant sounds from his words, but for "Elmo" he says "Melmo".

For several months, Ben would only say the first syllable of each word. He now says the full word but it did take a while. I think it's just a phase they go through.
