I am just wondering if i should start this habit or not. My twins don't drink a lot during the day, so I am wondering if I give them a sippy cup of water at naps and at nighttime if they might be more inclined to drink? Wondering if this might be starting a bad habit though (like if they run out they cry for us to fill it up - right now my twins STTN with no problems), anyone else have opinions on this either way?

    TIA!

omg, if my guys sttn i would not change ANYTHING!

however, i do think drinking water is important. i've read that it's a good idea to offer it after a meal. since mine have not mastered sippies yet (and a lot still gets on their shirts) we do this, but i still give them a bottle of water when we get in our carseats, as well (they don't like getting in them so this helps me!). i am trying to get them to drink 4-8 oz/day. we don't drink juice, however.... but, i digress!

to answer your question--don't change anything! give them water but at different times/day.

I cant remember what the reason was but a few months ago, we started leaving a sippy cup of water in there. They usually dont drink it and it has just become something they NEED to have in there. Sometimes though they do drink it which may (I know it is!) be the reason they soak through at night! So my advice, dont do it!!!

My girls take juice mix(half water half juice) or water to bed on most nights. Jessy still has a strong need to suck to comfort. They are both often dry in the morning or barely wet.

I never have. Our sippies are the kind without valves, so if they tipped over during the night, the bedding would be soaked. I just never let them think it was a possibility to have water with them all night.

Now that they're in big kid beds, I've considered doing it, because I do think they get thirsty sometimes. But then, we haven't started night potty training yet, and I don't want them peeing any more than they otherwise would.

I know they drink a lot of water at daycare and I try to offer them enough during the day at home.

I am really concerned that mine are not drinking enough, so I may consider giving them a sippy cup of water at naps, but maybe not at night...that way I hopefully wont have any issues with sttn !

I give my DD a sippy of WATER at night. She is my good sleeper and when she does wake, shes usually thirsty. The water sippy has eliminated any unnecessary waking on my part to help her :) IF shes still crying she either needs her diaper changed or somethings not right (such as she needs extra comfort etc).

If your kids STTN they probably wouldnt know the sippy was there.

If they are sick or it's been a really hot day, or I suspect dehydration for some reason - then I give sippy cups of water. But as someday I'm hoping to not wake to very full/wet diapers - I don't make a habit of it.

I never have or never thought of it.I feel kinda like a mean mommy know.

They do get up a get a drink sometimes when they go to potty at night.

I guess just leaving it in the crib so if they do get thirsty it shouldn't hurt nothing. That way you know they have a drink if they need it.

I didn't because I didn't want to create a habit that I would later have to break. That is, when potty training began. Also, if you do decide to give them a cup, don't give any juice or milk, even mixed with water, because it will rot their teeth if they get in the habit of falling asleep while drinking--they don't swallow the last bit, and the sugar just bathes their teeth all night.

I never did because at that age mine usually woke up with a full diaper anyway and I didn't want it to leak (they already leaked every now and then). I also thought about when we would eventually potty train them and didn't want to have to break the water habit at night. I was nervous if they drank the water at night they would wet their bed and take longer to be night trained. If they are already sleeping through the night I probably would'nt offer it and just try to offer water more through out the day.

not something I've ever done - but then again I've also never given mine a bottle to "make them fall asleep" either...

Mine never had sippy cups in their cots but now they are in big beds they sometimes do have a sippy of water. Most often it will be when they are ill but sometimes theyask for one when they are not ill (mostly they don't drink much). Staying dry is not a problem because if they need to pee they get up and go to the bathroom.

Honestly if yours STTN i'm not sure it would do any good to have a sippy there anyway-they can't drink if they're sleeping. Do you have a drink available to them all day? Or only at mealtimes? I've always kept a drink out close to where mine play and within their reach so they know that they can take a sip whenever they're thirsty. Also once they got a bit older (around 2yrs I think) I made a rule that they had to drink one cup of water/juice at lunch and one at tea. That way I knew they were getting a fair amount of liquid.

Never even occured to me. It's not a habit I want to start and I doubt they are going to dehydrate overnight. At naps, they would probably just use them as missiles anyway.

Only when they're sick. Silly mouthbreathing drying out their mouths. . .

We didn't for a long time until this fall. It gets really dry in our house and I always wake up so thirsty and figured that maybe they do too. Well I was right, the water is gone by morning. They drink it throughout the nite. They have STTN since they were 10 months old and this didn't effect that at all.

I said sometimes... but honestly, I never done it for DS. Lately we have done it a few times for DD, but only if she asks. She has been having some sleep issues, and the last random couple of nights, she woke up and called for water ... so we tried giving it to her in her crib. I'm not really sure it makes any difference. hehe.

Kevin has one but he doesn't drink from it. It's like a security blanket. He likes to hold it but it has to be full. So it basically has the same water for a two days then I dump it, clean it and give him another. He is usually dry in the morning.

We started that at some point between turning one and stoping BFing at 18 months. Just water, in a cup with a valve. I sleep with a mug of water beside me and often wake up needing a drink, so why wouldn't they? In any case, leaky diaper or potty training, they had it. When they began overflowing their diaper, I'd go up a size for nighttimes, and then when I hit the top of the size range, I'd go up before I went to sleep and change their diaper so they'd have a fresh one for the longest part of the night (they rarely woke up all the way for this).

When potty training, they have a potty in their room (didn't want them wandering the halls), so they could get up and go anytime they needed to. They both wore pull-ups until they went a month or more without a wet pull-ups in the AM. DD is now in regular underwear, DS is working his way towards that a little more slowly - he won't wake up to pee, but he's doing better about holding it to the morning.

For the most part, they don't drink much at night. They know it's there if they need it, but it's usually mostly full in the AM. DD will drink more than DS on any given day/night. There were nights where she would drain it, and I'd change her diaper at my bedtime, but better that she had it than crying because she's thirsty.

I don't consider this a habit to break, since I'm almost 33 and will not be giving up my mug of water anytime soon :)

Nope, don't do it here. We too have the kid of sippies without valves, so they'd leak. I think there have been a few rare times that one was sick, and was sleeping in a pnp in our room that we let him have one, but that was it.

I've never done it (unless they were sick with fevers, and then I take a cup into them but I don't let them keep it) and probably wouldn't start doing it unless I had a reason to think they were dehydrated throughout the night. Mine wake up totally wet, they drink a ton of liquid throughout the day. I couldn't imagine adding extra liquid at night, that would definitely cause them to wake up soaking wet. I think then too it might become something they would need for comfort and have to have it to sleep with, which means you would have that to deal with.

My girls have had sippies of water in their cribs/beds since they were about 14 months old. Dh and I ALWAYS have a bottle of water by our bed so it makes sense that they should have water as well. We have never really had a problem with them asking for more during the night. We fill their sippy cup before bed and they have never drank the whole thing in one night. We have a special sippy cup we use that is just for their bed. We wash it weekly and fill it nightly (if they even drank anything from it). I don't see why it's a bad habit unless you are in the process of potty training which we will soon be approaching so I'm not sure if we may have to temporarily take it away or if it will even affect the process. We'll play it by ear and see how it goes.
