DNA tests

    Hi All!

this is my first time posting in the forum, though I've enjoyed reading for a while now! I had a question for all that have had the DNA test preformed...

I was told my DD's were fraternal by OB etc. but everyone (well, except DH and I!) thought they looked so much alike that my mother-in-law paid for the test. She went through ProActive Genetics. Well, to my surprise, it came back Identical!

Well, my Mom, who also thought they were Frat, doesn't believe it! She thinks they take your money and tell everyone Identical! So, while reading in these forums it seems so many get ID results I'm starting to think she may not be crazy! Since I thought ID is so much more rare than Frat.

soooo..... I was wondering how many out there had the test done and what the results were. Tall order huh? But I'm really curious!

    Thanks!!

Our test was done through proactive genetics and it came back identical.

I haven't had the test done, but I have felt the same as you before. It seems that the majority of the people who have the testing done get an identical result, but if you think about it, if you have to question whether they are identical or not to the point that you would actually spend money to find out, then they probably are identical.

Edited to add :wavey: and welcome to twinstuff.

I feel there is a lot of truth to this "theory" -- if you can obviously tell that your twins are frat... no test is needed...
but if you have to wonder if they truly are or not... chances are that they would be! :)

I have had my boys tested and they are ID but I feel like PP the majority of people who test would be testing ID twins.

Oh and I used a company in Canada

I have to agree with the other pp's. I have been thinking about getting mine tested b/c we have never been told. The girls look so much alike that I have my suspicions. If they didn't look so much alike, I wouldn't even bother having them tested.

This is my pet peeve. No one - even your doctor - can tell you FOR SURE they are frats...they can only tell you they are ID, but no doctor can tell they are frats...

eta: many people, drs, ultrasound techs, etc... told me mine were frats...And I think they are, but we don't know. And I hate it when I know more than my medical personel...

I agree w/ PP. There is NO WAY I would ever test my fraternal girls. They have different blood types & hair color....however if they looked similiar I would.

Mine tested ID but I thought they would before the test (while DH was POSITIVE they were fraternal). I have seen people post about fraternal results with very young babies but like the PPs said, nobody tests babies who are obviously fraternal.

I used proactive genetics and mine came back identical. I still wonder today if the test was wrong since they look so different to me, but everyone else things they look the same. They also have the same blood type.

I was also told frat by my OB... I kept telling everyone (before and after they were born) that I thought they were ID.
my bestfriend thought I was nuts when they were born and said they have to be frat...at their first birthday she said she was wrong and they have to be ID. My mom still thought they were frat, and so did stbx, however I still thought they were ID and had them tested. I was right.

I say, post the pics and let us TS mommies decide!

That's a great idea! I love the ID or frat game.

Love the game...post the pictures ladies. I also think it's sometimes easier to tell with the older babies/toddlers! Post pictures.

I'm in the group of I was told fraternal, always thought fraternal (looked totally different to me), but everyone else thought ID. So we are waiting to test.

Well we were told fraternal too. They came out and the nurses said there was no way they were fraternal. The head neonatologist said, "Oh, yes, they are fraternal. Di/Di." UGH!!! That is at one of the leading teaching hospitals in the Chicago area.

Anyway, we also used pro-active genetics. They are definately ID.

Thank you all for your input!
I agree, most people who would have the test would already have suspicions and probable cause!! I wouldn't have bothered because I was sure they were frat, they don't look that much alike to me (but I'm the mom...)! But it was my MIL's money, so, hey why not!! My husband and I look a lot a like (we've been dating since 9th grade and several times have been told we look like siblings...don't worry, we're not!! :icon_biggrin: ) so it wasn't a surprise to me that they have the same hair, eye color, skin tone etc!

The funny thing is the same people that say they look so much alike also say Isobel looks like my sister and Chloe looks like DH's sister! And our sisters look nothing alike!!

I'd let you can judge for yourselves but I can't figure out how to put the pic in!!

The head neonatologist said, "Oh, yes, they are fraternal. Di/Di." UGH!!! That is at one of the leading teaching hospitals in the Chicago area.

I'll do you one better. My doctor read the placenta pathology report, which was mono-di....and he told us that meant they could be either identical or fraternal. I guess he thought di-di was fraternal and mono-mono was identical and mono-di was 50/50? I don't know, but yes, it's scary when you know more about it than your own doctor!!

Oh, and my nurse practitioner that I saw in the beginning did an ultrasound at 8 weeks to check for heartbeat, and found two. She printed out the picture, with both of them in the same sac - not even a membrane could be spotted between them (we did spot the thin membrane at 20 weeks). She also pointed out the one placenta and said we'd have to watch closely to be sure one didn't 'steal all the groceries.' At that point I knew nothing about twins and asked if she could tell from the ultrasound whether identical or fraternal, and she said there was no way to tell. I suppose that's better than telling me the wrong answer, but yes, she should have had a pretty darn good guess that they were identical at that point!

ETA: OP's look pretty identical to me!

Another mommy of twin boys posted a while back about having her kids DNA tested b/c they looked so much alike. I posted some pics of my twin boys on here for all to see and everyone said they were identical. I was told fraternal by my OB as well. I have yet to test. I'm giving them another year and if they don't start looking different by then... then I will test :) But for now, when asked I say fraternal... if someone assumes identical... I just play along!

They look ID to me but I'd post a couple of more pics.

My boys are ID and my MIL always said P looks so much like DH and E looks like me but the next time she sees them she's calling them by the wrong name. And these boys don't look like me at all.

OK!! I concede! The test was probably right! ;) When I went looking for pic to post, I sometimes had a hard time remembering who was who if they weren't together! I guess I just have those "mom eyes!"

It's funny though, they went to the pedi yesterday and she didn't know about the test yet so I had her guess. She guessed frat! When I told her, she thinks they are mirror image too! dimples on opposite cheeks, hair parts the opposite way, they suck the fingers on the opposite hands.

Here are a couple of my fav pic though! But those little buggers just won't look at the camera and smile at the same time for pics together!

OY. Things like this really freak me out. It's one thing if they don't know about something outside their specialty, but something like this they SHOULD know.

I vote ID too...either way they are so stinkin' cute! I was told frat too because they were di/di. I go back & forth...maybe I'll try to find a pic & have a TS vote! I wish my mil would fork over the $ to pay for a test, LOL...maybe I'll ask for one for Christmas :D !
