Not sure if this is the right place for this post, so Mods, feel free to move it. With all the sicknesses going around our house, I'm trying to do my best to disinfect toys that the babies mouth...but not sure what to use. I feel totally uncomfortable using Lysol spray or some type of lysol wipes because of the residue when it dries...just doesn't seem good to use on toys. What do ya'll use to clean/disinfect toys? Water/Bleach (not sure how good this is either) or Water/Vinegar, etc. What concentration % of each do you use. Thanks!
You could use lysol but then after you lysol also get a cloth with just water and clean it that way after. That's what I've done in the past. Lysol then rinse with water. I think I'd wipe with water afterward even if you use bleach. I don't like the idea of bleach or lysol in their mouths and they tend to put everything in their mouths!
I too was wary about using Lysol or similar products on the children's toys/high chairs/etc. so I now use Nature Clean Household Disinfectant. It is a Canadian brand so not sure if it's available in the US but I am positive you could find something similar there. I will also occasionally disinfect certain toys in a bleach solution using 1tbsp bleach to a gallon of water. I wash the toys with soap and water first, then soak in the bleach solution for about 15 minutes, then rinse and dry.
I use Clorox bleach on surfaces that need disinfecting/sanitizing--like if raw meat spills. It evaporates and is very safe. They have good instructions on the Clorox website. I like Clorox Anywhere, cause it is premixed already, but buying a jug of bleach and diluting it yourself costs just pennies. This is what daycares are recommended to use. I run small dirty toys through the dishwasher or washer.
I use Seventh Generation wipes and spray. It's a natural cleaner that is safe. According to the advertisements, it kills 99% of germs.
It depends on what it is- I love to throw plush stuff in with their laundry, plastic in the dishwasher. Otherwise, I just use disinfectant wipes & make sure the surface is GOOD & dry before they get anywhere near it.
We bought some wipes at our cloth diaper store that I'm sure you could find online. It's called Dapple toy and surface wipes. They're a bit pricey, of course, but I'd rather use these on something I know is going to go right back in the mouth. Laura
I use lysol wipes and spray on hard surfaces and make sure they are totally dry before they play with them. Anything that I can throw in the washing machine (stuffed toys) I do that as well.
