Hi! I work in a school district & actually switched to a new district this year, so I only have about 12 sick days to use for my maternity leave. The rest of my 10 week leave my salary will be docked. We're talking thousands. [IMG]*sigh* So...I checked into a few disability insurances & of course am not eligible for them b/c they consider pregnancy a pre-existing condition. Does anyone know of a disability insurance I could still enroll in? Just was curious. Thanks so much!!

Unfornately I looked into it too, because my leave is completely unpaid. Sorry to say I didn't find anything at all. Maybe someone else has had better luck

I didn't receive any money for the 7 weeks I was on bedrest or the 6 after I delivered, it was difficult but we managed somehow. I don't have any ideas but hope it all works out for you!

I also checked into the disability when I was placed on bed rest about a month ago...I was only working part time as a computer trainer...and according to my company, "if" they pay for disability (which mine didn't) you had to work a minimum of 32 hours a week to qualify.

So nothing for me either...and I still have 10 weeks to go we hope...then about 6 weeks after that before going back part time. I don't know WHAT we're going to do.... [IMG]

    GOOD LUCK!!!

I have AFLAC and it covers me before for bedrest, and after for 6 weeks. But unfortunately it wont' start until 10 months after you sign the papers for pregnancy.

I would keep searching!! Good Luck

My employer is small, does not offer disability, and up until me, had never had a pregnant employee or maternity policy. So, before i got pregnant, I looked around (A LOT) for disability that I could purchase myself and found that the few plans i could purchase were expensive and did not pay nearly my full salary. I decided I'd rather bank some savings, hope my employer would kick something in (as is customary in my industry), and wing it instead. As far as plans to purchase after find out you're pregnant - I did not come across any of those either. Sorry - wish I had better info for you - good luck!

I'm not sure what state you are in but in California State Disability pays a percentage of what you make.

I live in California and you are given short term disability leave for having a baby. You are entitled to

    4 weeks before the delivery
6 weeks after the delivery (8 weeks for a c/s)
6 additional weeks of California Family Leave

While the amount I received was not my full salary, it was about 60% of it.

Check into your state's short term disability -- most states have at least 6 weeks.

Where I work we use LIFEWISE ASSURANCE. We're in the Northwest, so it might just be a NW business, but worth looking into. They pay for two weeks prior to birth and 6 or 8 weeks post (depending on delivery method) at 60%. Good luck!

My company told me If have to be put of bedrest or anything, then I can do Short Term Diability..Which pays up to 13 weeks..Which was a relief for me..

I work for a school district too. I did not have disability insurance and could kick myself for not getting it BEFORE I got pregnant. If for any reason you have to go on bedrest, you may still get some pay. I was put on bedrest at 24 weeks. After I used all of my sick leave, I was given disibility pay, or differential pay, through my schoold district. This pay was my regular salary, less the cost of a sub for each day I was out. So I did get SOME pay, it just was not a whole lot. So check into how it works. Like I said, if you have a medical reason that you cannot work, that does not guarantee that you will get NO money at all.

I live in California also. The state paid me disability the 4 months I was on bedrest and the 8 weeks after the c-section. It was only a % of my regular salary (the maximum is $820 per week-I think) but it helped a lot! Good luck.

I don't have any disability either. I'm switching to half time after new years, so my pay will be cut in half. I get to work all of those hours from home though, which is WONDERFUL.

I'll stay at half time until the girls come or I just can't work any more. After that, I'll burn my leave at a half time rate, that I accrued while full time. Once my leave is all gone (should last about 4 or 5 weeks). I'll go back to half time for 4 weeks or so (from home again) before I go back to full time.

It's confusing, but it keeps me from having to take a leave of absence and it keeps us bringing in SOME money the whole time I'm gone. I still don't know how we're going to manage since I'm the primary bread winner, but this is the best solution we could come up with.

my understanding is if it is doctor's orders they will start paying even before the standard 4 weeks before delivery.

    Thanks ladies!

I live in Illinois. I did check with TRS (Teacher's Retirement System) yesterday & found out I can get 40% of my salary paid AFTER I use my 12 sick days for leave. They will do 6 weeks of disability pay for a vaginal delivery & 8 for a c-section.
