DIRT... is this a boy thing, an individual thing, or do all 3 YOs worship dirt?

My gosh, the dirt is going to be the end of me. We had some landscape work done and part of it was large boulder placement near a deck. It looks terrific but it's not quite finished... we need to get a load of sand to cover the under layer of RED CLAY that they put down. Well, the boys have discovered that if they get the red clay wet, they can skate on it in bare feet. And then they fall, get up and go again. This was the price I paid to get the hot tub spring cleaning project finished -- two boys covered from scalp to toenails in red clay. I'm sure it's terrific for their skin but not so sure on the laundry. I had them standing naked and giggling in a bucket of water on the back porch while I washed off the worst of it before wrapping each in an old towel and carrying them upstairs to the bathtub. The clothes are soaking in an enzyme detergent and we're hoping for the best.

If that's not enough, there is also a large pile of topsoil in the front yard that is for multiple smaller projects and hasn't all been distributed yet. It's still about 7' tall and the two of them think it's fun to climb. So, they've gotten it packed down pretty good now and are belly surfing Superman style down the pile or rolling down (which actually scares me more because it doesn't look controlled at all). But hey, I can get my gardening done and it just costs me a bath and fresh clothes. Well, they've now upped the ante to barefoot skiing down the steep & crumbly side of the pile where the dirt is being gradually scooped away. Remarkably, they have enough balance to pull this off.

Some days I wonder if what goes on at our house in any way resembles other peoples' lives.

Sorry about the dirt Debi, but I'm excited to think that all it might take to get some gardening done this summer is a pile of topsoil, a bath and fresh clothes, hmmm!

No dirt for us so far, my girls (well my mom ) built a snow man today!

I think it just must be 3 year olds. I have b/g twins and they always seem to find dirt to play in or old dry leaves.

I don't know, mine do not like to be dirty at all! Ainsley wanted to change her skirt because she got a drop of milk on it this morning.

No clue, but I'm guessing an individual thing. Nadia doesn't like to play in the dirt...if she's outside, she's either on the swing, or playing "tea party" with some old cups, and whatever sticks, stones and leaves she can find. :)

My little ones haven't been outside much yet, but I'll let you know after this summer. I suspect Kevan will be more similar to your boys in personality. ;)

I think it's an individual thing...but all my individual children love it! They seem to be able to spot a dirt spot and start digging or drawing, or rolling (doesn't really matter what they do, they can sure enjoy it)...and then they find the water and add it!! Yep, lots of fun!

I think it is an idividual thing as well. My oldest DS never really played in the dirt. .Oldest DD didnt really play in the dirt until she saw DS2 playing in it, so they are my only two who really like to play in dirt and put it on/in things, etc. DD2 is a dainty little thing and very girly, but ocassionally, she might touch some dirt.

Probably an individual thing but also boy-related. My son loves to play in all things dirt-related. He sits, rolls, throws, etc. My daughter will take a stick and move the dirt but she doesn't really touch it. Now, sand, they both love. Mommy, not so much since it seems to create large piles in my house when we forget to check their shoes.

My girls love to be dirty, but they also love to change their clothes and will take any excuse to do so--sometimes I think they get dirty on purpose, just to see how many different dresses they can wear in one day!

I think it's a touch/sensory thing. Some kids love to touch mud, others don't.

I do think boys are maybe more likely to be that way than girls. BUT, Sydney is the exception to that rule, for sure. My SIL told me one day, "I just love Sydney. The only time she's really clean is Sunday mornings at church." We do bathe her, of course. The clean just doesn't last long, LOL.
