We think Cricket and Piper are identical twins, but have never done the DNA test. That said, they have the same features, the same teeth, the same hair swirls, etc. So I figure they have the same genetic potential for height and weight. My concern is that over the last six months, Cricket has been growing like a little weed and Piper has grown only a very little. Cricket is now an inch taller than Piper and outweighs her by two pounds (25 and 23 lbs). They're 21 months old, so Cricket is "average" size and Piper is now only about 10th percentile. Cricket looks solid whereas Piper looks lithe and small framed but not unhealthy.

It's not really surprising that Cricket is bigger; she was born 12 ounces bigger and has always had a better appetite. She loves to eat and Piper loves to refuse food. Piper caught up size-wise by nine months and they stayed within ounces of each other until 15 months. Since then, Cricket has sort of pulled ahead.

I know I shouldn't compare, and it really doesn't matter if one of the girls is bigger than the other... but it's worrying me. I feel irrational so I could really use some stories from other people. I know I can't force Piper to take in more calories if she doesn't want to. She's inquisitive and active and happy, just not growing very much. Is it a big deal that Cricket is growing a lot and Piper isn't? Does anyone else have identical twins that are different heights and weights at this age? Did your smaller twin catch up eventually?

    Thanks,
    Tricia

My girls are identical and Kiara is the bigger one by 1/2" and about a pound or two. Kalyna was bigger at birth but Kiara surpassed her within that first year.
I don't really think that being Identical means they will be exact carbon copies...it is very normal for one to be a little taller and if one is a better eater, than expected that that one will be heavier! Dont' worry, as long as they are healthy and thriving!!

My ID girls were born with a 9 oz difference. The smaller one was growth restricted. Now they are 4 lbs apart and an inch difference in height. My little one has always been a terrible eater. I've given up on hoping that she'll catch up and be the same size as her sister. I know it's so hard not to compare, but as long as she's developing on target and staying on the growth curve she's probably ok.

My boys are ID but were born 1 lbs and 1/2 inch apart because of TTTS. Their weight and height differences have stayed more or less the same over the years. There was one period when the shorter one caught up with the taller one for about 6 months.

My oldest twin was born a little bit longer and just a few ounces heavier. It's been that way ever sicne and they're almost 3. He's about a half an inch taller and weighs a few ounces more. Its always been like that and most likely, it may stay like that up until atleast school.
