Did your waterbreak?

I have been having really bad painful contractions, my first trip to L&D I was at 4cm, 70% effaced so when they got even more painful and lasted for a few hours I decided to go back, contractions continued thru efforts to stop them but still no change to cervix.

At this point I don't want to go back unless my waterbreaks, because obviously painful consistent contractions isn't a good way to judge whether its real or not. Did your water break with your twins? How do you know when its really time.

My water did not break and my girls were a month early. We called my OB when my contractions were consistently 7 minutes apart. By the time we got to the hospital they were 3 minutes apart but my water never broke.

My water broke! I got up to use the bathroom and there was no mistaking it!

Same here...and I had bad contractions for weeks before, too, so I know how you feel - I asked my dr at my 36 week visit how I would know it was real labor since I'd had such bad ones that even the terbutaline didn't stop them at the end. She couldn't tell me anything except that I'd know. To be honest, I probably wouldn't have known if my water hadn't broken! The contractions felt the same (and I even felt better, less pain, after my water broke). They didn't get really painful until I was already at the hospital and almost 8 cm...then I knew the difference (and the babies came 3 hours later!)! GL and hang in there - it's almost time!!

My water broke at the hospital when I was already dilated to a 7/8. I was only in labor for 6 hours so be careful!!

My water never broke. I was having minor contractions (I didn't know about) when I went in for my scheduled c-section with the twins.
With this last pregnancy, I was told that when my contractions were about 4 minutes apart and regular for an hour, to come in. It never happened. They stayed at 11 minutes apart... and never progressed until I was started on pitocin at the hospital. (I was however dialated to a 5 when I went to my scheduled dr's appt. that day. (they admited me))

They broke both waters for me.

I can not believe that they sent you home at 4 cm dialated!

I agree w/ pp... The sent you home at 4 cm!!!!

Anyway, yes my water did break! It did not w/ my older child, but w/ the twins it was very clear that is what happened... Lots of water!

Also, if you are having consistent and painful contractions that do not go away definately call your doctor! They are there to answer your questions and to be there when you think the babies are coming... Don't worry about bothering them or anything else, just call... Describe what is going on and they will tell you when to go to the hospital... If they don't and you think it is time to go go, you don't want to be on the news for delivering twins in the car on the way to the hospital!!! :D

My water broke as I was getting out of bed at 36w6d. I was not contracting at all and I never dilated.

My water never broke... not even with my singletons! At 37.5 weeks, I ended up in hospital because of contractions. I didn't even realize I was having them. I has uncomfortable no matter if I was having them or not! I had my babies c-section at 37 weeks 6 days, mainly because they were both breech. After they were born, I found out why they hadn't turned... they were so big there wasn't any room left to turn! Hope to see you in FY soon!

My water never broke and I was in and out of the hospital with contractions but was always sent home until finally I was induced at 37w6days.

I was 4 cm dilated for 2 weeks - can't remember about being effaced though. They broke my water after I had my 37 week appt and found I was 5 cm dilated.

My water broke. I had painful contractions the entire day before. It was so painful the night before that I was in the bathtub the whole night and then I slept on my hands and knees. I can tell you though that once my real contractions started after my water broke, I could tell a HUGE difference. I'd been having contractions that were uncomfortable for 12 weeks before I delivered, but there was a serious difference. I went to L & D the day before my water broke because I was so uncomfortable and in pain, but was sent home. Everyone kept telling me, you will know, but I didn't believe them. I really did know, it was just really different.
Hope that helps. That really stressed me out, I thought I wouldn't know when the babies were coming.

I told myself I wouldn't go back unless I had some really clear sign either.

My water broke at 35 weeks and 2 days.

If you're having timeable contractions then you should go in.

I was induced with all my kids and my water didn't break even after hours of labor. The twins' water never broke so they just broke it during the c-section while Dax's water was broken by the midwife after over 24 hours of labor.

Even though it always is the signal of labor on TV, water breaking doesn't tend to happen a lot at the beginning of labor. It only happens somewhere between 8-13% of the time.

Well you'll have to check out my next post, because I had my girls...yippee!! But I found out from the doctor that it would have been dangerous for my water to break because they were both transverse and the chance of the umbilical cord slipping out the cervix which could be deadly, so thanks to all of you.
