Did your newborn twins look ID?

We just had di/di twins last week. We expected that they would be frat and would look as different as their siblings (the girls are definitely frat as one has brown hair and one has bright red hair, and then our singleton DS has blonde hair not to mention each of our kids has looked VERY different from one another at birth.) Much to our surprise, the boys look very similar. Right down to the swirl cowlick on their heads. We finally took off their bracelets today as we can usually tell them apart (and I painted Griffin's toenail just in case!) The only way we can tell in pictures is to look at either what they were wearing at that time or check to see if we can see the scratch on Griffin's eye from birth.

Everyone that sees them says ID and the ped thinks they are ID too. But I keep seeing the differences in them - the fact that Kian's face is slightly more oval and Griffin's is slightly rounder or that one's nose is slightly pointier.

So I'm curious - did your IDs look ID from birth? Or if they did look ID, did they end up being ID or did they end up changing enough that they were frat? Here's a pic in case anyone is interested - it's one of the few with both boys together where their faces are together and it's from a few hours after birth (Griffin was 4 ounces heavier than Kian at birth):

Here's another but they aren't positioned the same:

And just in case anyone is curious, here's the girl twins:

My girls were also di/di and so we knew chances were higher they were fraternal. They looked identical from birth, just like your boys! They had tiny differences, like if you looked close Amelia had a tiny bit more hair than Lily, and she still does. Amelia is a little bit bigger too. But they are identical, and I'm fairly certain your boys are too!

My girls were mono/di and looked more different than your boys. I would say they are ID. My girls were 9oz different at birth so they were a little easier to tell apart. They are flipping adorable!!!!!!! Your girls are cute too :) I have never seen fraternals with different color hair (but then again I have only met like 4 sets) and its ridiculously cute!

So adorable!! How interesting that it would appear that you do have one set of frats(confiermed) and then identicals(seems so!!) I wonder how often that happens :unknw: ???

Did your IDs look ID from birth? I have a kind of funny story. We did IVF and implanted 2 embryos so when they were born we were expecting fraternals. The whole week in the hospital, I was having trouble telling them apart. Luckily my dh was better at telling them that I was. I was very emotional that week and I remember crying one day saying that I did not even know which baby was which (thinking they were fraternal and wondered what my problem was that I could not tell them apart). The biggest difference was face shape...one round...one more oval which I now know is not genetics. Looking back I feel so much better that there was a reason I could not tell them apart. So the answer to your question, yes they looked ID from birth.

I found out when they were 2 that they were ID.

Oh honey, those girls are too precious for words! And your boys, they're ID. My ID girls looked similar but were not carbon copies as there was a 2lb weight difference. Now, at almost 17 mos people are finally starting to tell me that they look alike. I still think they look nothing alike and even went so far as to call my OB for the report on my placenta to make sure there was only one and no fusing. Yep, they're ID (mine, and yours too!)...if I had to bet.

    I'm betting ID too!

You can't look at facial shape, because that can be affected by how they lay in the womb. You also can't go by cheeks, because if one is chubbier than the other one their face shape changes.

Look at their eyes, their nose, their lips and their chin, and their ears side by side. If all those are nearly identical, I'd be willing to be they are id! ;)

Your girls are gorgeous by the way, and most definitely frat!

My girls are 26 days old. They are mono/di with one placenta, all docs we've seen during pregnancy told us they are ID. The only pic that we couldn't tell them apart was the very first pic the hospital staff took when they were born. They are 1 lbs different, one is much chubbier than the other. Almost eveybody says "oh they look different". I am just starting to doubt that they are not ID! It is weird that when I look at thier features separately, they have the same nose, same eyes, lips and ears. But they just look different when they are next to each other. Guess we'll just wait and see like you did

My ID twins looked a lot alike at birth but not totally ID, Ashley was quite a bit bigger than Alicia and also they had different head shapes due to one being born vaginally and one by c/s. If I had to guess I'd say your boys are ID and very cute!! Love the name Griffin too btw! :D

Can you get us a few pics of JUST their ears side by side. I can see that the one has very distinctive ears. If they both have those, they are absolutely identical. My $ is already on identical but if the ears are both like that, I'm 1000% sure of it. They are gorgeous, your girls are too.

    WOW! How cool.

You can also tell us about their ears. :)

    Congratulations!

Very interesting! I know if we're patient we'll figure it out since they will either keep looking ID or really change and have different hair colors or features.

Meredith - This is the best I could get - does it show what you were looking for? http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/kcprochazka/bf7ad90c.jpg

We've been trying to see if there are any differences other than face shape, but haven't found them yet. I was working on their birth announcement pics and was moving pictures around on my workspace and happened to put each picture on half of the screen - check this out. Their position is slightly different in the pics, but the mouths couldn't be more identical: http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a246/kcprochazka/bbdb8d0e.jpg The rest of the kids all have DH's lips (beautiful full lips) and these guys seem to have mine with a thin upper lip.

I just posted this same thread about my boys. Mine were also di/di twins. They looked identical from the start. The only way we can tell them apart is by Brewer being a lil larger than Hudson. Even then it gets confusing. When they are dressed alike I keep them in ID bracelets a friend made them.
I think there is a good chance your boys are ID they look so much alike!

I think ID, but for sure tooo cute and beautiful little girls. You are blessed. My boys were di/di and turned out to be ID. We thought they were because they looked so much alike from the beginning.

Honestly, I wouldn't waste a dime on a DNA test. I would seriously bet money that they are ID. Not a doubt in my mind. And every one of your children are just gorgeous! I love, love, love the red hair on your DD!

They are so cute!! I think they look ID too. I'm going through the same thing - my guys are 3 months old and I change my mind every day. One day they look ID, the next they don't! I am probably going to get the test done for Mother's Day.

Totally ID, and totally adorable! All four of them! Our boys looked alot alike at birth, but a pound different. We had their DNA tested when they were 4.5 months old. I'm so glad we did, because we can see the differences in them and I think I would have always wondered. However, unless people know them really well, they can't tell them apart. I'm often asked how do you tell them apart. It's easy for me, because I'm their mom, lol!

Just wanted to update this for anyone searching in the future! We got the DNA test back - they are indeed IDENTICAL! So we now officially have a singleton, a set of fraternals and a set of identicals!! What are the chances of that?
