    Hi!

I have always drank about a gallon of water throughout the day.

Since the day we found out we were pregnant, I have had to consistantly get up every 2hrs to pee, this has never changed!!
It used to be i would drink a few sips of water each time. (I've never been able to limit my water at night, just get too thirsty).

What I'm noticing in the last week or so is my water intake from a few sips, has increased to 8-12 oz every time I get up...I can't believe how thirsty I am...

I also wake up feeling like I've smoked 2 packs of ciggerettes the night before...I'm thirsty and congested...is this a weird pregnancy thing...or just plain wierd?

I am 25.4days...anyone have any advice?

    TIA!

This is a random thought, but i've heard one possible symptom of gestational diabetes is excess thirst. You could do some research and ask your DR next time you go in.

    Hi Rebecca,
Yes, I have been more thirsty as my pregnancy has gone along. When I go out to eat at our favorite restaurant now, the waitress just leaves a pitcher of water at the table because she can't keep up with me.

As far as the congestion and thirst thing goes, it's normal to feel congested during pregnancy (I have for both of mine) because your mucus membranes swell or something like that. You may feel thirsty when you wake up because you may be breathing through your mouth during the night without even knowing it.

I agree with the previous post ~ I too drank more water while pregnant and would wake up feeling ICK due to the congestion!!
I turned into a mouth breather/snorer during my pregnancy, FUN :nea:
Luckily it all goes away with the delivery :good:
Taking small sips of water during the night would help with the dry mouth/congestion, but not with the getting up every 2 hours to go potty ;)
Hang in there and keep drinking lots o' water!

My desire for water has also increased.

I was told to drink at least 10 glasses (8 oz.) per day - and I drink about 100 ounces a day, especially in this heat we're having.

Ugh! I can't really relate to being thisty during the day, but nighttime is ridiculous! I wake up at around 3 or 4, w/a very dry mouth and have to sip on water frequently for the next couple of hours. Yes, this increases the number of times I have to get up to pee and it drives me nuts. It's all the congestion. I'm looking forward to that going away. I've wondered if lowering my fan speed would help w/the dry mouth (b/c yes, I'm breathing out of my mouth b/c I can't out of my nose), but then I worry I'll get too hot.

I couldn't get enough to drink towards the end, I would drink 8-16 oz everytime I drank something. I repeatedly asked the MD about diabetes because of the excessive thirst but they said b/c my glucose had come back normal that there was nothing to worry about. I guess the increased H2O is required for fetal development/placental maintenance for two babies. Keep on drinking b/c dehydration can lead to premature contractions!!!!

I also had a stuffy nose my entire pregnancy, increased secretion produciton all over the place :)

Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy! and BTW, after you deliver you'll appreciate being able to hold your pee for hours at a time again :)

I remember I was so thirsty when I was pregnant. And it had to be ICE cold water and nothing else. I would get up to pee and would have to drink a full glass. You have to think that two babies sucking up all your water is a lot more for you to drink!! LOL

I drink at least 10 glasses of different kind of water each day, mostly ice cold too!! Think that tends to quench my thirst better than hot drinks. The increase fluid consumption is physiological, becos of the increasing blood volume, as well as we're drinking for 3 now!! :D

I could be wrong... But my understanding is that part of the increased thirst is related to your increasing blood volume. With a singleton pregnancy, your body increases blood volume by 50%. With a twin pregnancy it's even more.

I'm guessing all the increased fluids it takes to support the babies is probably impacting this too.

And I don't know about everyone else, but I found the increased blood volume made me soooooooooo ridiculously hot I was sweating way more than I have in my entire life. :p So I imagine you're replacing fluids for that too.

LOL, what's extra fun is the sweating you do AFTER the pregnancy for about 2 weeks (?) to get RID of all the extra fluids. I can hardly wait this time, myself. I would love to see my ankles again.

If you don't already, try putting a bit of lemon in your water. I personally find this helps to quench really insatiable (sp?) thirst.

    Cheers,

    Jennifer

As with the PP I too am experiencing the THIRST! I can drink over a gallon of water a day. I do slow down a lot at night. Due to, too many sleepless nights, spent going to the bathroom! As for the congestion, this is something I’m noticing just in the last 2 weeks.

I have also read extreme thirst can be a sign of gestational diabetes, something maybe to bring up with the DR...
