Did you get steroid shots?

I'm just curious how many of you got steroid shots before your babies were born. Did you get them to be proactive or did you get them in an emergency situation because you were likely to deliver very soon. Also, how long after you got the shots did you deliver?

I've been on bedrest since 19w1d and I'm scheduled to get the steroid shots at the end of this week. It's still way too early for the babies to come, but I'll feel just the tiniest bit better after I've had the shots, I think.

    Thanks for your responses.

I had the steriod shots after I had started labor. If needed, they can only give the shots either every 12 or 24 hours can't remember. I only got one round. They gave me the shot around 8Pm and I delivered at 6am. They had hoped to get me another shot just to be sure, but my labor was progressing too fast. I delivered at 30 weeks and my guys were on the vent for about 6 hours. Not sure if the shots made a difference or not.

I got them in the hospital at 30 weeks as I was there on bedrest for pre-e. I truly believe they helped my boys a great deal as they were born at 32 weeks.

They gave me steroid shots when I was admitted to the hospital for PTL, and then they gave me a second dose about an hour before I delivered the girls at 28weeks 1day.

I got them at 34 weeks when I was hospitalized for labwork due to pre-e. My babies were born a week later at 35 weeks due to pre-e. I was glad I had the shots the previous week.

i had them at 24w5d and 24w6d when hospitalized for PTL and i'm convinced the shots are why my boys, born at 34w1d, came out with NO breathing issues at all. They spent 6 days in the NICU to make sure they'd eat and hold their temp, but the docs never had concerns about their lungs.

Yup- I got two doses at 30w when I was hospitalized for ptl. I delivered at 34 weeks and Ana had no breathing problems and Meara only had to be on the CPAP with oxygen for about 12 hours.

I had the shots at 28 weeks when the doctor was worried about me deliverying too early due to ttts. My boys were delivered via emergency c-section at 33 weeks and were on CPAP and oxygen for 24 hours. They stayed in the NICU for 15 days due to feeding issues.

I got the injections around 28 weeks i believe - just as a precaution. I wound up carrying them to 37 weeks and having a scheduled c section. It's 2 shots 24 hours apart..

I had them at 25w, when an u/s showed DS's IUGR & we had no idea how soon we'd have to deliver - could have been in days or weeks. Luckily, made it to 34w. DS was breathing on his own from the beginning; DD came out breathing on her own, but then needed assistance after that.

Good luck! I hope you can pack in lots more weeks before delivering. :)

[SIZE=10pt]I received one shot when I was admitted to the hospital at 35 weeks. It was just an extra safety/precautionary thing though. I ending up delivering early the next morning, 35wks 1 day.

You already know I got them for emergency purposes at 24w and truly truly believed they helped my babies when they came so early! I am so glad you are getting them Beth!

I got them at 24 weeks due to PTL, but didn't deliver until 36+3 weeks. Neither of my girls had a bit of problem breathing. The shots hurt like heck, but I'm positive they helped out in the end.

I got them at 24 weeks because it looked that they could come at any time. I guess I wouldn't consider that emergent at that point, but they did it to be safe.

Then I got a rescue dose 48 hours prior to delivering at 31 weeks, that one was more emergent since baby A's water had broken. They whisked that shot in lickety split and gave it exactly 48 hours to work.

I got them at 29 weeks when I started to dialate. My boys were born a week later. Twin B ended up with a collapsed lung and on a vent for 3 days. He's been back and forth between CPAP and the nasal canula ever since (they were born 7 weeks ago). Twin A was on CPAP and then the canula and now needs nothing! So...I'm not sure if they helped or not.

    you're babies are adorable!!!

AND, i got my shots at 29 weeks. the doc feared i'd go into pre-term labor. i didn't go into labor till i was induced at 37 weeks, so i didn't really NEED them, i guess, but i'm glad i got them. and it burned a little when the stuff went thru, but it wasn't bad.

My OB gave them to me at 29wks for precautionary reasons. He gives them to anyone at risks for PTL, and being pg with twins qualifies for that. I never had an issue with PTL but do believe that it prevented my girls from having any issues with breathing when they were born at 36w5d.

Totally worth getting and they can't hurt.

I have never had them, but a friend of mine with a singleton had them when she went into PTL at 26 weeks. I haven't had any PTL issues or anything so I think they only do them here in emergency situations. :)

I had them at 32w1d due to hypertension. I got one then 24 hours later got the other. It's not too bad - just hurts a minute and is a little sore afterward. I was so relieved to have them though. I delivered a week later at 33w1d. Both babies were breathing room air from the beginning and had no breathing problems in the NICU. They were there for 3 weeks for growing/feeding as well as normal preemie bradycardias and apnea issues. I feel that they helped my babies enormously. A friend had her twins over a week and a half later in her PG with no shots and one of hers had breathing issues. The NICU nurses swear by the shots and told me that the difference in preemies with and without them in enormous.

    Good luck!!!!

I delivered at 32 weeks 3 days and I got the shot at the hospital before I delivered. Peyton spent 2 weeks in the NICU mostly just to learn to eat and such. He was off the vent with in a few hours of birth and off oxygen after a little less than a week.

I had them at 25 weeks when I was admitted for PTL. We ended up making it to 34+3, Megan had no breathing issues and Natalie was on the vent for about 48 hours.

I had 2 shots after my second hospital visit at 26 wks for preterm labor. I delivered at 33 wks and although my boys were in the NICU for 2 wks, they didn't have too many problems breathing after the first few hours. I think it worked for them. but that's really just a guess. I heard the shots really only give you help for a couple of weeks.

Well, I got the shots at 33 weeks and had my boys at 34 weeks. I was getting them just in case, but when I went in for my 34 week appt the doc ended up delivering them because of cord flow issues. They were born at 34 weeks 2 days and had no nicu or breathing trouble or anything! They stayed in my room with me and we all went home 3 days later. I would definately recommend the shots to everyone! I really believe they made all the difference in the world with my boys.

I got the shots at 26 weeks and was admitted to the hospital for bed rest because my cervix was shortening despite the cerclage I had at 18 weeks. I delivered at 29w4d. My girls were both on the vent for a day or 2. One of them had some heart problems and needed CPAP on and off but I definitely feel the shots helped.

I got the shots at 28 weeks (I think) as a precaution. Jake needed a little help (they just blew oxygen on his face) and he was on a bit of oxygen for a day or so (it's all a blur) but basically the kids were in great shape when they were born.

They definitely made me feel better.

I had the shots at 25 weeks because we were getting an amnioreduction due to TTTS. I didn't have the girls until 35 weeks. The shots cause both a chemical and a physical change in the lungs. The chemical change only lasts up to 2 weeks while the physical change remains. That is why they say that the shots are most helpful within 2-10 days of receiving them. I hope you're doing well!

I got them at 26 weeks when I was hospitalized for PTL. I delivered at exactly 36 weeks - no NICU time, actually no issues at all really. DH and I joke that the shots worked really well for Baylinn's lungs because she is LOUD when she is upset!
