Did their reflux meds stop working?

Lincoln was diagnosed with reflux around 6 months old. He went on zantac and it was amazing. He didn't spit up anymore, he gained weight and we saw a huge difference in him. The last several days it's like a switch went off, and it's not working anymore. He's puking everything, he's fussing a ton more and he seems to be in pain when he eats. I'm fairly certain it's not a stomach bug or something--he's still bright and happy in between meals (though he spits up constantly) so I'm wondering if anyone else experienced reflux meds no longer working. I know zantac is kind of the basic drug to start out with---if we switch do you think we'd notice a difference? They are almost 8 months old now---I would have thought this would be getting better by now. What was your experience?

My girls are only 2 months and are on Zantac, but we went in a couple weeks ago to get weighed and have our dosage upped and it worked.... till now. I have one who started projectiling again yesterday so I'll have them adjust the dose again when we go in for our 2mo appt this week.

Could be a dosage issue, especially if he's gained weight! It's worth a call to the pedi tomorrow to see if upping the dosage is in order!!

Personally, we didn't have real luck until we switched to Prevacid.

    Good Luck!

We continually have to increase the dosage at each appt with pediatrician, especially if he is still being fussy, spitting up, arching his back, etc. We went from Zantac to Losec, the big daddy of acid production inhibitors....:( Good luck to you! Reflux stinks.

As PPs have said, it could be a dosage issue. However, any chance there could be some teeth popping through? My older DD always spit more, became fussier and had issues with eating right around the time she had a new tooth. I think the excess saliva messes up their stomachs. I was told by the Ped. that 4 months (adjusted) is usually about peak for reflux so I'm looking forward to things getting easier now! My refluxers are almost 5 months adjusted.

Reyna, possibly. I remember though around 8 months, it seemed like my boys' reflux was suddenly worse, but then it got better again by 10 months. My pedi kept us on the same meds. However, I would still talk to yours about this. Sorry to hear you are having trouble again. :hug99: Poor Lincoln. :(

My babies have been on Pepcid since 4 weeks and I've had to up it 4 times in 2 months. The Pepcid works by weight and so is the Zantac, I believe. I am off to see the GI specialist this morning I am so excited I only slept 3.5 hours (babies slept 8). I am praying for some Prevacid. And I second that...reflux stinks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We had to up our dosage at times too. But, there was a period when they were learning to sit and crawl that it seemed to get a little worse because of the pressure on their bellies. I would definitely call the pedi.

Zantac is really weight sensitive, so it's possible that they need a dosage increase. Zantac didn't work for us, and we ended up on Axid and then Prevacid.
