Ok, so for 4 days they have been home (or at Becky444's one day) and they have been going potty. We've had accidents, but not too bad.

So, today I decide that we have to "take this show on the road" because they have to learn that they can potty in OTHER PLACES - PUBLIC places! Well, Ai refused and waited till after her 3RD ATTEMPT ON THE POTTY AT MCDONALDS TO PEE IN THE PLAY STRUCTURE! It really has me upset and befuddled. I know it's not MY failure (cognitively anyhow) but I feel like SUCH a failure. Then Martin, who minutes before had tinkled in the potty went to the top of the structure and decided he could just poop in his pants. He was NOT UPSET AT ALL (training pants - not pull ups)!

SOOOOOOOO how do you get TRAINING PANTS OFF without a HUGE MESS?! YOU DON'T! You have it all up and down their legs and back etc. It was awful!

They are in their NEW UNDERWEAR at home right now, but how do I take them out? Do I put a pull up on them? I don't want to have a crutch, but I am GETTING RID OF DIAPERS! We are giving them to their cousin tonight! I can't give up, but this is so incredibly difficult! :cray: I need a shoulder to cry on!!!

Di, I am sorry. :hug99: You can cry on my shoulder!

If it makes you feel any better Katelyn totally peed in a McDonald's play structure too. It was so embarrassing and also after like 4 trips to bathroom and her not doing a thing..., but you know what-- this is how they learn. Stick with it. It is not easy, but I promise you it will get easier.

    Lots of hugs! :hug99:

    Big hug!
I'm glad I'm not the only one whose kid has peed in a play structure. Only ours was right over the mess part at burger king. It was like she knew it would drip right down to the floor. (this was after I had taken her to the bathroom about 3 times).

It does get better. We went to Florida for a week, and Dani did just fine no accidents. But I had to let her ask me to go to the potty, other wise i got annoyed since she will only go if she has to go. She has been in underwear since before Christmas, including overnight.
Now to get Sydney to use the potty instead of her diaper.

Your doing better then me too! We aren't even trying

With my older two I put these vinyl pants on over their underwear. I'm sure the feel and learn pull-ups will work too. I also had little scissors and if there was messy poops in regular underpants to deal with I would just cut them off! Wasn't worth the mess. When out and about I do what is easiest...which is probably why we aren't even trying yet!

    Hang in there!

Thanks ladies!!! I needed the encouragement. I told my husband I felt SO defeated!! :cray:

I think the pull ups at night are going to be a BAD IDEA, but I just bought and UNWRAPPED 2 packages. :cray: I forgot about the vinyl covers, so thanks for the reminder. That might make it MORE YUCKY for them! Mmmmwwaaahhhhaaahhhaaahhaaa!!

Lisa, thanks for the reminder to make them tell me that they have to go! I need to quit hovering. If I can remain consistent for a few more days, we'll likely be over the hump.

The thing I didn't count on was them COMPLETELY CHANGING PERSONALITY!!! They are acting out WAY more and just not my same kids!! :cray:

I did not actually do both at one time. The idea of trying to get both to the bathroom "in time" was way too overwhelming, and Ian was more interested or willing to try. Also, we tackled the whole at home first, once that was handled, we did the out in public. Meaning, they had to go before we left and I kept track of time/drinks and they had the liners on and occasionally pull ups. But, I can not get them to eat at those places let alone stop and go potty when it is not a "normal" act yet. But that is how it worked for us. Good luck, they will get it.

That's a good thought. They had never even eaten inside one, so probably a tall order!

Di - I have no experience to share, but i wonder if they might be more comfortable if you brought a portable potty and they could use that outside/ by the car instead of the public bathroom? good luck this week - it sounds like you just need a little more time - i can only imagine how frustrating it must be!

I have heard this helps too. A mom from my local twins group swears by this one.

I think you have to choose a method & then stick with it. The all or nothing, underwear in 3-5 days worked for us -- but for those days, potty training was pretty much all we did. No way was I brave enough to be their roadie in the traveling potty show! We had 2 potty chairs, took one outside if we went in the yard, but that was about it.

They had gotten pretty consistent with having dry pull-up before then, and that made a difference, I guess. If we had to leave the house the week, I put a pull-up over their panties, so they'd still feel the lovely feel :p , but I wouldn't have the carseats to clean or puddles to explain in the grocery store. We mostly stayed at home, they were in panties and either very short dresses or tee shirts. If they wet their panties, I rinsed them in the tub and washed them at the end of the day. The first day, I washed about 15 pairs. The second, maybe 10, the third only 3 or 4.

After that week, I did put one of the potty seats in the back of car if we were going to be out and about, and yes we did use it some. Probably did that for about 3 months after I considered them trained. We also ditched the night-time pull-ups after that week. In the 3 years since, I can guarantee we've had no more than 5 night-time accidents between the 2 girls. Of course, Ella seems to have her accidents when we are spending the night away from home, but that's another story.

Marcia, thanks!!! I needed that info!!!

We are at home again all day today and will do the same tomorrow. That will be a FULL week with the ONE day of disaster.

We are having a BANNER day today, so I am optimistic but cautious! They have not had a single accident all day. They had a pull up for quiet time watching a movie. They emerged from that DRY and got back in their undies. Ali JUST went BY HERSELF to the BIG potty and POOPED!!! :a_smil09: She got a piece of chocolate and Martin had to try immediately for that too....alas, only a tinkle.

I have done virtually nothing but that all day!

Sounds like you are doing a great job! They are there, just all those little things to deal with now.

I used to take our little potty with us when we went to the park or other places too (learned that the hard way, had to go with no bathroom around) when they first learned.

I, also, when first learning (and the stage we are at with the boys now) put them in pull ups when we go places. I tell them it's underwear, just paper underwear. I really stress it's not a diaper, since it pulls up. They haven't had any accidents in their pull ups yet (I just started the public part last week). But, it's way easier to clean up if an accident happens.

Seriously, you are doing a great job. And although it seems like forever, in 2 months you'll look back and say, Wow, that wasn't so bad and it is SOOO worth it!

Thanks Heather!! I know it's a matter of time, but wow. Just when it's all going great it seems to be derailed.

I am planning to put their potties in the car if we ever leave the house again!! :D

 I'm NOT SO SURE!!! They are going steadily backwards! We are having more accidents instead of fewer! :cray: I'm really getting discouraged but TRYING NOT TO LET THEM KNOW!!! It's hard, but I am SURE THEY ARE READY!

Seriously, you are doing just fine! There seem to always be some backwards steps for various reasons along the way. Whether it's because they don't feel well, or because they are having an off day, or just because....they'll get on track again. You are almost there!!!

You're doing so much better than me... mine are still in diapers, and perfectly happy after they messed them up

Micah will sit on the potty in the morning, but rarely something happens (but lots happens at naptime  ). Shannon isn't even interested in the potty. Ugh... I feel like such a failure!

Maybe one day they'll just be trained? Haha, nice dream ;)
